Abuse is the debut full-length studio album by Singaporean grindcore band Wormrot.

Musical style and lyrical themes edit

Wormrot's "uncompromising aggression" manage to make Abuse "rides a thin line between grindcore and powerviolence, but the abundance of breakdowns and d-beat action keeps things from becoming musically stale or monotonous."[1][2] With its additional powerviolence and contemporary brutality,[3] Abuse lives up to its moniker not only for its "vulgar displays of power, but also for the care taken by the band to vary the arrangements and—for the most part—keep each track from bleeding into the next without any measure of distinction achieved."[4] Abuse is "fast, furious, and grindcore till death, yet the joint jumps with thrash metal splashes and pure heavy metal groove."[4]

Although Wormrot are not bringing anything new to grindcore,[5] the group "unleashes a disconcerting barrage of consistently memorable riffs,"[1] and "manage to make an inherently numbing genre memorable by avoiding the stylistic pitfalls of over-blasting or under-grooving."[2] The band's vocal patterns are driven with witty changeups through its rhythmic, song-oriented structure, whilst the inventive drum beats adds an old-school crust punk edge.[2][5]

The band's "incendiary lyrics" are militant at times and subject to interpretation even controversially.[4] Abuse begins with an audio sample of the infamous UCLA Taser incident on "Lost Swines", and proceeds to the National Rifle Association on "Double-Feeding", and all forms of authority ("Freedom to Act," "Overgrown Asshole," etc.), while engaging in foreign policy on "Indonesia."[1]
