'Quality Control Coach' The Quality Control Coach, as it is known today, was created by Mike Holmgren in 1990, who at that time was the Offensive Coordinator for the San Francisco 49er's. Jon Gruden was hired by Holmgren to be the first Quality Control Coach.
While the Quality Control Coach does not have a specific coaching role, their duties include breaking down game film and statistical data for upcoming opponents, scouting opponents, and assisting position coaches during practice. Due to the complexity of the job, there could be an Offensive Quality Control and a Defensive Quality Control position. Quality Control Coaches log many hours a day, in their position and some have been known to spend the night in their office.
The coaches gain extensive knowledge of play formations and move up the ranks to position coaches. Like Gruden, several coaches have gone on to become head coaches. Among those include Eric Mangini, Todd Haley, Steve Spagnuolo, Tony Sparano, Raheem Morris, Jim Schwartz, Mike McCarthy, and Lane Kiffin. Current head coaches Brad Childress and Jim Mora held similar positions prior to 1990.
