Postpartum Girdle A postpartum girdle is a form of abdominal binding or support used by some women in the period immediately following childbirth. The purpose of a postpartum girdle is to help the abdomen to regain its pre pregnancy state as quickly as possible. It achieves this by encouraging the internal organs, which have been displaced by the growing fetus and uterus, to return to their original positions. It also offers support to the abdominal muscles enabling the new mother to be more mobile which in itself speeds up recovery. The gentle presssure of the postpartum girdle encourages the womb to contract back down to its previous size quickly.

Wearing a postpartum girdle can be particularly helpful for women who have undergone childbirth via a Cesarean Section. By offering support to the abdominal muscles the new mother is better able to perform routine tasks such as lifting and carrying her newborn. The fact that the woman is able to be more active should in itself help to speed up the recovery process. Also by holding the muscles in place it is thought that the postpartum girdle assists them to knit together again more quickly.

The benefits of wearing a postpartum girdle are very hard to prove. Many women are absolutely convinced that they regained their shape better as a result of wearing one. However it is impossible to prove that these results would not have been achieved without using the girdle. Perhaps the most compelling evidence that the postparum girdle does work is the fact the some women have reported getting back into shape more quickly after their second child than their first in cases where they wore a postpartum girdle after the second child only.

There are many posrtpartum girdles available in various desings and styles.
