Clos Rougeard is a French wine producer in the Loire valley, located in the AOC of Saumur, in the village of Chacé.

History edit

The estate is owned by brothers Jean-Louis (Charly) and Bernard (Nady) Foucault who followed several preceding family generations and took over the responsibilities of management in 1969.[1]

The wines of Clos Rougeard are in high demand, and have achieved a level of cult wine status among certain circles.[1][2][3][4] Their red wines are, arguably, the apotheosis of Cabernet Franc.

Production edit

The vineyard area extends approximately 10 hectares (25 acres) of Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc, farmed at low yields without the use of herbicides or fertilisers.

The estate produces three red wines under the appellation label Saumur-Champigny, with the domaine Saumur-Champigny produced with fruit from various plots, the cuvéee named Le Bourg sourced from a 1-hectare (2.5-acre) plot of old vine Cabernet Franc, and the cuvée named Les Poyeux from a 3-hectare (7.4-acre) vineyard.[1][4]

The estate's white wine under the Saumur appellation is named Brézé, from a 1-hectare plot of Chenin Blanc. There has been produced a sweet Coteaux de Saumur in the past, depending on vintage conditions.[1]
