The Cherokee Area Council is a 501(c)(3) organization[2] and a local council of the Boy Scouts of America in Tennessee and Georgia, with the headquarters in Chattanooga. It serves three counties in Northwest Georgia and eight counties in Southeast Tenenssee.[4]

Programs offered by the council include: Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, and Exploring.[5] The council's Skymont Scout Reservation provides year-round and summer camping opportunities on the Cumberland Plateau.[6]

History edit

The Scouting movement in the Chattanooga area began in August 1910, with conversations about which scouting organization, Boy Scouts of America or American Boy Scouts, would become predominant in the area.[7]

Local leaders in Chatanooga met in November of 1910 to discuss forming a new Council.[7]

During the formations of the council, scout leaders worked closely with other youth organizations to facilitate camping and hiking.[7][1]

Scouting in Chatanooga had reached a membership of ten troops and more than 200 scouts by 1915.[1]

Organization edit

The council is divided into three districts:[4]

Council camp edit

Skymont Scout Reservation consists of over 2,400 acres (9.7 km2) on the edge of the Cumberland Mountains Plateau, hosts Scouts BSA summer camps, Cub Scout family camps and high adventure activities throughout the summer and other camps during the year.[6]

The camp is home to the Talidandaganu' Lodge of the Order of the Arrow.[8]
