Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection Established in 1921, the McClung Historical Collection is the research branch of the Lawson McGhee Library, a Knox County Public Library. Along with the Frank H. McClung Museum, it is one of the institutions established by Frank H. McClung's descendants. The collection focuses on the genealogy and history of the area and is located in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. The archives are a project of the East Tennessee Historical Society.[1]
The McClung collection contains and preserves a large collection of non-circulating genealogical and historical original reference material, such as books, printed genealogies, microfilm records, photographs, and manuscripts. The collection documents East Tennessee families, events, and places. Items in the collection are unavailable for inter-library loan. The library offers only partial online access to the archives. Detailed research on the collection is best conducted at its location in Knoxville, where appointments may be made for assistance and consultation. The McClung Collection is free and open to the public.
Photographic archives edit
A highlight of the photographic archives at the McClung Collection is the Thompson Photograph Collection.[2] The Thompson Photograph Collection has been a preservation focus at the library for two decades. James E. (Jim) Thompson (1881-1976) and his younger brother Robin Thompson (1895-1977) worked together as business partners in Thompson Brothers, a firm of pioneer commercial photographers from 1920 to 1926. The collection has an estimated 75,000 photographic negatives of Knoxville and East Tennessee from 1907 to 1960, and is expected eventually to contain 10,000 digital images. to By the late 1920s, their separate enterprises were known as Jim Thompson Co. and Robin Thompson, Inc.[3]
The Hugh Tyler Collection is an album of photographs of the James Agee family.[4]
