Bibliography edit

This is where you will compile the bibliography for your Wikipedia assignment. Please refer to the following resources for help:

  1. Bosch, Matias. “Juan Bosch: The Construction of Dominican Democracy.” Journal of Third World Studies, vol. 23, no. 1, Spring 2006, pp. 17–21. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=ip,uid&db=aph&AN=20817247&site=ehost-live&scope=site.
  • This is actually a speech given by the grandson of Juan Bosch, the founder of the Dominican Liberation Party in which he describes his father’s legacy as a major political figure. This would be useful in giving me a “personal” look into who Bosch was and could be good background information; I would probably put it in a section or subsection dedicated to the founder.

2. Department of Justice Office of Public Affairs. “Odebrecht and Braskem Plead Guilty and Agree to Pay at Least $3.5 Billion in Global Penalties to Resolve Largest Foreign Bribery Case in History.” The United States Department of Justice, 3 Oct. 2017, www.justice.gov/opa/pr/odebrecht-and-braskem-plead-guilty-and-agree-pay-least-35-billion-global-penalties-resolve.

  • This is a statement from the Justice Department’s Office of Public Affairs in 2016 in which it describes the Odebrecht case, giving most all of the specific details. Although it doesn’t explicitly mention DR, it has good info on the scandal itself. This would be good to use in the section on the Odebrecht scandal which heavily implicated the PLD.

3. Fernández, Leonel. “El PLD: Causas De Una Derrota.” Listindiario.com, 28 Sept. 2020, listindiario.com/la-republica/2020/09/28/636930/el-pld-causas-de-una-derrota.

  • Op-Ed article in a popular Dominican news site actually written by the former president of DR, Leonel Fernandez, who was a member of the PLD. He explains why the PLD lost the 2020 elections and actually states that the Odebrecht scandal played a role in the party’s loss. This would be useful in a section on the scandal or maybe on the elections; it also provides something of “insider” perspective.

4. Filmus, Daniel, and Lucila Rosso, editors. “América Latina, 1990-2018.: Avances Económicos, Retos Sociales.” Las Sendas Abiertas En América Latina: Aprendizajes y Desafíos Para Una Nueva Agenda De Transformaciones, by Rebeca Grynspan et al., CLACSO, Argentina, 2019, pp. 51–62. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctvt6rmdr.5. Accessed 11 Nov. 2020.

  • Chapter in a book about the modern challenges facing many Latin American countries. This specific chapter makes note of the loss of confidence many people had in their government after the revelations of the Odebrecht scandal. This would be pretty useful in the section on the scandal itself and I could possibly make the connection to the party’s loss in 2020.

5. Flores, Javier. “Primera Vez En Medio Siglo Aplazan Las Presidenciales.” Listindiario.com, 14 Apr. 2020, listindiario.com/la-republica/2020/04/14/613134/primera-vez-en-medio-siglo-aplazan-las-

presidenciales.

  • News article about the government’s decision in Spring to postpone the elections from May to July. The decision was made by the Dominican President Danilo Medina (PLD). This has been interpreted by some to be an attempt on the part of the party to upend the elections after they lost the municipal elections earlier that year. This could be put in a section about their loss in the 2020 elections.

6. Hall, Michael R. “The Transition from Dictatorship to Democracy in the Dominican Republic.” Journal of Third World Studies, vol. 23, no. 1, Spring 2006, pp. 13–16. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=ip,uid&db=aph&AN=20817246&site=ehost-live&scope=site.

  • This is a speech given at a banquet about Bosch’s legacy regarding the change in the Dominican political climate in the early ‘60s when it went from a 30+ year-dictatorship to a democracy. This would help me establish a background to Bosch or the new Dominican democracy as a whole.

7. IFES. “IFES Election Guide: Elections: Dominican Republic President 2020.” IFES Election Guide | Elections: Dominican Republic President 2020, 2020, www.electionguide.org/elections/id/3284/.

  • This “Election Guide” serves as something of a statistical database where it lists all of the candidates and their percentage of the votes in the election, voter turnout, etc. It would be very helpful for me in terms of possibly fact-checking the many charts on the Wikipedia page or maybe good info sprinkled throughout the article.

8. Junta Central Electoral. “Junta central electoral de la República Dominicana.” Junta Central Electoral de la República Dominicana (JCE), n.d. https://jce.gob.do/.

  • This is the website of the official Electoral Committee/Board which records the candidates, the results, etc. This would be good for a section on the election and might even be more “reliable” than the “Election Guide” source because this is the official agency that deals with the elections.

9. Peña, Beatriz Carolina. “La Persecución Como Contradiscurso Al Ordenya La Paz Trujilustas En Los Cuentos Escritos En El Exilio, De Juan Bosch.” Atenea, vol. 24, no. 1, June 2004, pp. 119–132. EBSCOhost.

  • Scholarly article that deals with the persecution and expulsion of many anti-Trujillo politicians during his regime; one of those was Juan Bosch. Once again, this could be helpful information for a section on the founder of the PLD.

10. Zapete, Marino. La Crónica Irreverente. 2nd ed., Santo Domingo, Editora Búho, 2019.

  • This book provides an extensive and detailed recounting of the corruption present in the Dominican government since the establishment of democracy in the mid-60s. Much of the corruption that occurred since the late 20th century has involved presidents and members of the PLD. This would be useful for a section on the history of corruption within the PLD starting in the ‘90s to the present.
