Everyone makes mistakes. Especially me. I believe in learning from one's mistakes, so I've compiled them all here (So I can see them and feel like an idiot, and also so others might not make the same mistakes that I did). Feel free to read through, criticize me, etc. See the archives (Yup, my mistakes are so numerous that they deserve an archive), too. My mistakes back then were worse than they are now. speedy notification edit

Please remember when proposing an article for deletion via afd, prod, or speedy. that it is required to use an informative edit summary saying so--it makes it easier for editors and administrators to find and work with them. And though not strictly required, it is considered polite to notify the author--there is supposed to be a bot, but it works very erratically.DGG (talk) 21:03, 15 March 2009 (UTC) Ok, I will do. But have been notifying the author by copy-pasting the code on the template in his talk page.

Are you sure about this one? edit

[1]? Philip Trueman (talk) 15:25, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Don't know about the content. Looks like 3 people are adding random content. Gave them benefit of doubt and reverted the removal of section. ManishEarthTalkStalk 15:28, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
I've given this a short semi-protection to let the spate of vandalism die down. Also removed unsourced section. Rodhullandemu 15:31, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Page blanked by author edit

Hi. Though page blanking is usually vandalism and needs to be reverted, it is worth looking first at the page history, because quite often the author has blanked his own page, as with Islamic marketing just now. In those cases the best thing is to tag it {{db-author}}. It can be confusing for an author who realises his page is inappropriate and blanks it, if his page is at once restored and he is accused of vandalism for the blanking and told it was unconstructive. January 2010 edit

  Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia.

I noticed that your user subpage at User:Manishearth may not meet Wikipedia's user page guideline because it spoofs elements of the MediaWiki interface, more specifically the "new messages" bar. If you believe that your userpage does not violate our guidelines, please leave a note here and we can discuss it. As an alternative, you may add {{Db-userreq}} to the top of the page in question and an administrator will delete it, or you can simply edit the page so that it meets Wikipedia's userpage guidelines. Thank you. Draftydoor (talk) 11:37, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

New Page Patrolling edit

Hi - FYI probably just a mis-click - but this one should definitely have been blanked as an attack. Thanks for your hard work patrolling.  7  07:11, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Thx. It wasn't a misclick, I miscategorized it. ManishEarthTalkStalk 07:13, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
Also - you just posted the warning to their user page instead of their talk page. Can I suggest that you db-author that page because the person who is being attacked really shouldn't have her name shown there. I've already given the author a LEVEL4IM warning. Thanks.  7  07:14, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks.. I haven't been patrolling for a few months, so im a bit rusty.
No problem - looks like you are already using Huggle - but you CSD'd this one manually. You may want to try WP:TWINKLE which automates some of the CSD tagging, author notification, and marking page patrolled steps. Would you mind if I db-author that userpage for you?  7  07:20, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
Sure. At the moment i'm recentchange patrolling. I just felt like doing a bit of NP patrolling too. ManishEarthTalkStalk 07:22, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
Ok - marked, thanks.  7  07:24, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Hiya edit

Just gotta say, thanks for the chuckle here , I went to check on one of the vandals I reported and was like "Wait-what?". Best of luck.--SKATER Speak. 07:38, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Yeah. I was using Huggle and was reporting a vandal when someone else reverted him. The page flipped and i reported the reverter by accident.ManishEarthTalkStalk 07:40, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Blanking edit

Hi there Manishearth. Thanks for your work, just letting you know that whenan author of a page blanks the page, it can be taken as a deletion request under CSD G7 , so it's a better idea to add {{Db-g7}} to the page rather than revert the user (especially if the page was previously nominated for deletion, as with Knascar knowledge). Best, - Kingpin13 (talk) 08:57, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Thx ManishEarthTalkStalk 09:14, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Whoops. THe page must have updated while using Huggle and I reverted your revert instead of the IP. I'll fix that. And whack myself with a trout..

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

A big whoopsies at ACC edit

For ACC users, at acc:44951, I didn't check the rangeblocks. At the time, I thought that the rangeblocks(r) could be seen at the global rangeblock (gr) page, just like contribs (c) are shown on global contribs (gc).

Oversight edit

I asked a user on-wiki if he wanted some of his revealed info OSed ManishEarthTalkStalk

ManishEarth, you are not an OS and you really should not be soliciting OS on-wiki as it leaves more traces of what might end up being oversighted or suppressed. Some of the information can be suppressed but some of it has been carried through further revisions and would be more complex to handle. delirious & lost~hugs~ 07:36, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, I did try to make it as vague as possible. Anyways, if it is oversighted, the traces won't matter, as they will point to hidden stuff. Someone who sees the traces will think "Hmm, his <something> was revealed, but I can't find where it is". Knowing that something was shown is not a breach of the privacy policy, if you can't find it. ManishEarthTalkStalk 15:04, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
First off, leaving traces of something being OSed invites the curious to dig deeper and look elsewhere (Wikipedia mirror sites) to see if they can get the info, which is rather counter-productive to the purpose of OS. Emailing User:Oversight and #wikimedia-oversights connect exist for communications to stay off-wiki as much as possible. Second, if you were to review his user space you would see that his name is not a secret. Though it is not out in the open with neon lights it is publicly available by his making/keeping it so. That means it does not in the strictest sense meet criteria 1 of WP:OVER, though final decision rests with an oversighter and not either of us. delirious & lost~hugs~ 18:14, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
