Max Bartos (born February 12, 2003) is an American actor and musician best known for originating the role of Darren Mulvey in the 2020 musical Sing Street. He was also seen in the Adam Sandler film Uncut Gems, and in Shane Dawson’s 2016 film The Lottery. Along with acting, he is a folk singer/songwriter who has released two studio albums, and is currently working on his third.

Early Life edit

Max was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to parents Todd and Rebecca Bartos, both attorneys. After moving to Lancaster at the age of 1, Max’s sister Ava was born. Max went to Lancaster Country Day School until 6th grade when he suffered a near fatal bicycle accident. In high school, he found out he was cast in Sing Street in his junior year, and moved to New York until the pandemic hit in 2020. Max graduated from the Stone Independent School in 2021, and moved back to New York soon afterwards.

Sing Street and Broadway edit

At 16, Max was cast and originated the role of Darren in Sing Street the musical in its 2019 workshops and off-broadway run at New York Theatre Workshop, and continued with the show when they announced their transfer to Broadway in December of 2019. The musical was initially set to premiere on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre in previews on March 26, 2020 and officially on April 19 with the same cast, but was ultimately delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[1][2][3] Nevertheless, a cast recording featuring the original Broadway cast was released on April 22, 2020.[4] The original Broadway cast reunited shortly after the shutdown to perform Sing Street: Grounded, a shortened version of the show done over zoom as a fundraiser for the Actors Fund.[5]

Music Career edit

Max is an accomplished singer/songwriter, releasing two studio albums, and accompanying singles, and is working on his third. Max plays Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Bass, Drums, Piano, Banjo, and Mandolin. His debut single “Playlist Of My Life” was released in 2020, followed by the release of his first album “Such Is Life” in October 2021. In October of 2023, he released his second album “Memento Mori”, a folk rock concept album about a ghost mourning his separation from his bride after his death, and yearning to return to her. Max and his band set out on an accompanying tour for “Memento Mori”. Max was then asked to join indie rock band Mommyheads as their touring guitarist/keyboard player, and they are currently touring the US.

Film Career edit

Max got his start in film when he was cast to play Young Shane in Shane Dawson’s YouTube short film The Lottery, which has received over 10 million views. He has had multiple roles in other films such as; Forget-Me-Not, Talent Night at Auschwitz: Bunk Five, Burkin County, and The Most Dangerous Man. His best known film credit is his role in the 2019 film Uncut Gems.
