Dave Smith of IGN noted that while he may not be the actual protagonist of XII, " he says he's the hero, and he makes a pretty convincing case for it" by how he routinely upstages the other characters "thanks to a combination of sharp looks and even sharper wit." He further emphasized that while the game's plot had plenty of twists, the best ones fell to Balthier as did the best lines of dialogue, something he felt fitting for a character that could be seen as the game's leading man.[1]
