GLYCEROL ROLE IN GLYCOLYSIS (Glycerol halffeed glycolytic mechanism)

Glycerol also plays a role in glycolysis by acting intermediate. Glycerol is first of all activated by addition of a phosphate to carbon 3 of glycerol molecule. The resulting product is glycerol3phosphate .under the action of the enzyme glycerol 3 phosphate dehydrogenase,glycerol3 phosphate is then converted to dihydoxyacetone phosphate (which is an intermediate in glycolysis ).Dihydoxyacetone phosphate can then undergo isomerisation to form glyceraldehyde3phosphate ,this is catalyzed by phosphoisomerase.glyceraldehyde3 phosphate can then continue in the glycolytic pathway.this takes place in the cytosol.
