The 2019 Indonesian protests are an ongoing series of demonstrations occurring in multiple cities across Indonesia, which opposed the passing of several controversial bills by the Indonesian People's Representative Council, namely a bill revising the Indonesian Criminal Code and a law regarding the Corruption Eradication Commission.

Background edit

The Indonesian criminal code (KUHP) originated from the colonial era under the Dutch East Indies administration, and plans to reform the code had been in place for years.[8] A new proposed draft law, which would replace it, contained clauses which would ban premarital sex, cohabitation, abortion outside of extreme circumstances, and insults against the president, vice president, religions, or state symbols.[9]
