link confusion

Im not sure if I am addressing the right person. I added my page in the external link section and you removed it. What puzzles me is that there is website called glad rags in the external links that does the same thing my site does and you let it remain. I have gone thru different categories under external links like car related issues etc. and they also provide information and sell products. Can you tell me what make my site different over the many others that are allowed? Thanks

Re.: Kaufman UFOs

The info came from UFO Casebook, Jeff Rense's website and I've seen independent material about the matter all over the 'net, incl. a online videotape in which a UFO is seen teleporting as it is moving about, and a local TV station had been cited as a source of info. regarding the matter. That station link is in the External Links in the article. It even has some pixes of these things in the article. It seems that a week goes by, then the UFO Casebook website gets a pix of a UFO that came from Kaufman, Texas, such as one that was photographed on 3-06-06, and E-mailed to the site, and/or to sites, like Jeff Rense's website. Minor problem

I was puttins some tables of reults on this article, and only the bottom country on each table is coming up in italics, i looked at the code, and i dont know why, so could you please help. Confuzzled again

I encounterd them when i was trying to put sime templates on wikipedia onto another site that uses wiki code, and since a significant amount if the templates use templates, a managed to work my way down to the elementary template such as this, however when I copied the source across, instead of doing whatever it does here, the other wiki didnt understand the {{{ }}} used, and simplly displayed thext as it was with an error message. I think this is how you send someone a message - I'm not very good at this. I don't know about her sales figures but she has some info on imdb.com that I was trying to link her too. I don't know enough about citations to know how to do it.

Hi again Joy - Nicky Lelean DEFINITELY exists because I've heard one of her songs. She's like a spoof artist. You know like the Rednex from 10 years ago? When I read the article, I assumed that the sales figures weren't true but they were supposed to be part of her spoof persona. Have you heard of the girl band Vanilla? They had a number 14 hit in 1997 with No Way No Way. They TOO had a biography similar to this one where they claimed to have formed a Marxist band. That fact IS infact documented on the net. If you have a search for one of the band (Alida Swart), you'll find it.

Well, if needs be - the original creator of the article or other fans of her stuff should correct it. I'm not a fan of hers, tbh, I only removed that box when I corrected the spelling of a few words like "favorite". Let her fans redo the page!

If i improve the page, making it fact based only and removing the user list. will the "deletion" tag be considered removing?

Removal of warning tag

Joy, are you an administrator? Considering the content of the article I think it really needs some sort of warning. Frankly, I was surprised to find that this type of material was on Wikipedia at all. I am not a parent but I would be pretty furious if I had a minor child who accidentally ran across this article and started reading it. If you are not an administrator, please revert the removal of the tag. If you are an administrator, is there a standard tag that should be added?

By the way, in addition to being not appropriate for minors and highly offensive to some adults, the material may constitute illegal pornography in some countries. Remember--people who are not native speakers of English may not understand the terms up front.

Joy, thanks for responding. However, I would say there is a difference between censorship and a warning tag. I read the policy and it doesn't say anything about a warning tag. Frankly, I don't see why there isn't a template similar to what I put. If there are "spoiler warning" tags there should be warning tags for other content such as sexually explicit, detailed description of violence, may not be suitable for minors, etc. And particularly regarding sexually explicit material, in certain countries the material could be illegal.

I still would like to put the tag (although, after having looked over the article more, it really does not get into much detail about sex). Do you think it actually violates the censorship policy? I would interpret "censor for minors" as requiring a person to indicate their age when they sign up for an account and if material is not considered appropriate for minors the servers refuse to serve up that page. Censoring means restricting access to material, not warning the person about the content while allowing unrestricted access. There are a lot of adults who would not want to read such material. And quite frankly, adults who do use porn are often among the strongest advocates of preventing minors from having access to such materials.

I would say, "Why not take a poll on the Discussion page", but let's face it, posting anything there is an admission the person visited the article and a lot of people won't want a public record of that. The result of any such poll would not be even remotely representative.

more on the (very problimatic) BiNet USA entry

Well, being a very baby "newbie" at the time I did not understand the significance of everything I was looking at.

I see that the consensus reached was "keep". However it also seem to me that it says on the BiNet USA's Talk Page that the consensus reached was to "delete".

Is something either labeled incorrectly or not updated? Am I misreading something?

I (& others) are having a terrible time with this (& other pages related to the bisexual community). So I am tying to stop this by going thru every possible area of miscomunication to make sure all is correct and up to wikipedia's standards. Reason being, whereas at the time of our original discussions you yourself had characterized the entry as "the article was improved", a few days ago I found that another editor had suddenly characterized those same changes as "neutrality disputed" and further said "I've removed a few of the most egregious pro-Binet parts".

Since I am currently feeling a bit shell-shocked from dashing about tying to put out fires in a large number of entries having to do with the bisexual community, (& not at all sure why longstanding entries are suddenly being questioned . . . maybe someone got to the letter "B" in a clean-up campaign?), don't want even the slightest thing left to chance or possible misunderstanding. I was recently shocked to fall over a user talk page where I found that editors (whom I do not know) were characterizing me as some sort of "representative" of BiNet USA (I am not, not even a member, not working at their behest, etc.).

The comments then went on to suggest that a series of unrelated articles (mostly filling in info about the NYC LGBT Community) I had added to were being done at the organizations behest as some sort of self-aggrandizing publicity stunt.

That's a tough one. Hard to tell to what extent it's notable and to what extent the creator is simply successfully promoting it. I think what I'd do is slap an {{importance}} tag on it and start up a discussion on the talk page with the author. See if he/she can help you out with some kind of information that vouches for the importance of these awards. If nothing satisfactory comes of it, then I'd send it to AfD. in re: BiNet USA so here I am again . . .

In response to Wikipedia editor Aaron Brenneman's comments, I picked an American LGBT Civil rights organization's entry as a template and re-wrote the BiNet USA entry in what I hope is a well researched, appropriately cited, "encyclopedic tone". As per suggestion of Liberatore I worked on the entry "off-line". The original article is here [2] and my rewrite is here [3].

So now, what is the correct procedure to move new data in, especially as I would assume Wikipedia doesn't want to loose the old comment? Should I just go into "edit" mode; select and delete all the old data and do a copy/paste with the new data? Or should I somehow archive the old article with all it's comments, especially the ones about the "neutrally being disputed"?

Also since Wikipedia editor Aaron Brenneman did the work to review and put in the comments regarding same, is it considered good form to notify him prior to or when I put in the new data? Thank you CyntWorkStuff 18:25, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

It was due to extraordinary circumstances that it came into existence anyway. I am not a major contributor. I usually just add/update small facts or maybe sometimes create entries that are bare-bones "Stubs". It's mostly just things I come across by accident while I'm using Wikipedia for research on systems oriented things I'm working on in RL that might be missing info. I saw elsewhere. You seem to be mentoring Philc 0780. Can you please take a look at User_talk:Philc_0780#FIFA_World_Rankings_-_copyright_violations. He has now played around with the text in his sandbox and shuffled around the wording of the copyrighted material a bit more, but it is still based upon the original copyrighted material, see [4]. Greensboro Massacre

You're an Admin, right? Even if not, maybe you can help with this. On the page noted in the heading, I got into a tussle with this one guy who kept posting a website that is essentially an ad for a documentary film that his brother made, about the 1979 Greensboro incident. I kept reverting it as spam, and he kept re-reverting it on the grounds that it has free clips on it. • Hey Joy. I'm the guy that apparently got into a "tussle" with Wahkeenah. Look, I'm not going to press on with this -- this experience has pretty much frustrated me from participating in Wikipedia moving forward -- but I do want to give you a bit of context. Funny, I'm writing this post directly following the Beyond Broadcast conference at Berkman, where we spent two days attempting to pursuade old media to embrace new media approaches such as social tagging, open API's and wiki's...

• My brother and I are attempting to try a new form of storytelling. He wrote, directed and produced a documentary about the Greensboro Massacre between 1997 and 2002. We're attempting to carry the story beyond it's climax in 2002 (Andy's film helped get Kwame Cannon released from prison) by picking up the narrative just prior to the release of the first US-based Truth and Reconciliation Commission report in late May. The community (we both live in Greensboro) is already starting up a heated conversation, so Andy is going to use the blog to extend the narrative by releasing video footage of the TRC hearings, interviews in the community -- creating a part blog, part vlog, part documentary.

• Yeah, the awards he won in 2002 weren't from SXSW or Tribeca -- he spent less than $3,000 total on the project. Yeah, the blog isn't a popular one... yet, but why does any of this matter? We don't have advertising like a Boing Boing or other popular blogs and never will. We're being tagged as spam because there's an innocuous link to paypal just in case if someone wants to buy the film? I'm sorry, but I have to respectfully disagree with this determination. We're serving our own community -- *ours*, we live in Greensboro! -- yet we can't link to this conversation and film from the subject matter it covers?

• The Vietnam War was a real-life event, as was the Greensboro Massacre. On the Vietnam War Wikipedia page, there's a list of 25 films, each leading to a page with a link to an *official site* of the film. The only difference between that scenario and this scenario, is that I haven't created an official Wikipedia page for Greensboro's Child and linked there from the Greensboro Massacre page.

Thank you for your response on the Greensboro item. If it's OK, I will post your response and see if the user wants to do follow up. I'm guessing he did not follow up because he knew he was trying to get away with something. But as you say, if The People say it's OK, then it should be OK. Another question: I wonder if it's safe to post images from the Chicago Daily News archive, as long as proper credit is given.
