Music is being cut from the school systems all over the country, and the younger generation, our next generation will suffer for it almost as much as we will. In understanding budget cuts in schools systems and the preparation for standardized testing, it is easy to see why music programs are of the first among many to be cut from the public and in some cases private school systems. This page will include articles to further the notion that music not only increases the intelligence of the human mind but also expands it, enabling great growth. The NCES, other whys known as the National Center for Education Statistics performed a large scale assessment test in 2009, which concluded that approximately one-half of these students were assessed in music, and the other half were assessed in visual arts. Neurological Adavantages to Learning Music at a Young Age:

The quotation below is taken from an article discussing the “Mozart Effect”. Simply what is being stated is that through music one has the ability to increase all skills in one’s life, whether it be dealing with people, working, studying… "The skills you learn through music get transferred to your communication skills, study skills and cognitive skills. There are two books that go into greater detail while observing the brain neurologically in dealing with music. Both of these books prove that music is not only an art but also a mechanism to allow growth in the mind. Oliver Sack’s book “Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain, Revised and Expanded Edition" (First Link Below) discusses over 29 case studies that he himself studied and recorded. The other book is Daniel Levitin’s book, “This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession”. (Second Link Below) This is a fascinating book that looks even further into the minds reaction to music and answers some very interesting questions that many of you may have asked yourselves before.
