John W. Allen is one of the world's leading counter culture experts and ethnomycologists involved in the research of entheogenic fungi that contain the mind-altering alkaloids psilocine and/or psilocybine and other tryptamine related compounds. This includes 33-years of research in the field of ethnomycology.

Recently a newly studied species has been named to honor John W. Allen for his 33-years of contributions to the historical study, past and present on the widespread pandemic use of psilocybian fungi. The new species, first studied by John W. Allen has been designated as Psilocybe allenii Borovička, Rockefeller and Peter G. Werner.
