History of the system edit

From the 1924–25 season, when Allsvenskan was created, and on to 1927–28, the league system had the following structure. It should be noted that teams from Division 2 Uppsvenska Serien where not allowed promotion to Allsvenskan, and teams from a large part of northern Sweden, approximately above the province of Medelpad, were not allowed to play in the national league system:

3– Lower divisions were local and not connected to the national league system. Clubs were promoted on individual basis.

From 1928–29 when the second level of the system, Division 2, gained official status, and a third level, Division 3, was created, the league system had the following structure, which lasted for only four seasons, until 1931–32. Still, many clubs in northern Sweden were excluded from the system:
