Christoph 27 is the callsign of the rescue helicopter operated by DRF Luftrettung, that has been provided for air rescue in and around Nuremberg.

Station, Deployment and Crew

The rescue helicopter operated by DRF Luftrettung is stationed at the airport in Nuremberg. It is operating every day, from sunrise, 7am at the earliest, to sunset.

Dispatched by the public-safety answering point in Nuremberg or the coordination center for intensive care transport helicopters in Munich, it responds to emergency calls if an emergency physician is required, a non-transporting EMS vehicle won't be able to arrive in time, or if the type of injury requires a transporting the patient via helicopter.

Along with a pilot, Christoph 27 always carries an emergency physician from a hospital in Nuremberg, Fürth, Neumarkt or the university hospital in Erlangen, as well as an emergency medical technician. The EMTs are part of the helicopter crew (HEMS Crew Member) and support the pilot by helping with the communication and navigation, and operating the winch. From a legal standpoint, the emergency physician is just a passenger. Default equipment includes a 90m (295ft) winch, which is being used for winch/rope rescues in Franconian Switzerland. In and around the city of Nuremberg, Christoph 27 cooperates closely with the rope rescue team of the local fire department as well as with the surrounding mountain rescue services

A light aircraft (Piper PA-28, carrying 2 pilots) and a DRF rescue helicopter (Callsign: „D-HDRV“ aka. "Christoph 27", also carrying 2 pilots) collided mid-air on January 23, 2018 at approximately 1pm in Oberhausen-Rheinhausen / Philippsburg around Karlsruhe. Unfortunately, the crash was fatal for all 4 pilots.

Operator

Christoph 27, which was formerly known as SAR 74, was first operated by the Bundeswehr on July 1, 1973. In 1998, DRF Luftrettung became its new operator.

Helicopter Type

Since 2010, DRF Luftrettung has been using a Eurocopter EC 135 for Christoph 27. The previous helicopter wa a Eurocopter BK 117.

Additional Info

The name Christoph refers to Saint Christopher. In iconographies, Saint Christopher is often portrayed as a giant with a staff, carrying the child of christ on his shoulders over a river. He counts as one of the fourteen holy helpers and is known as the patron Saint of travelers today. That's why all german rescue helicopters use the callsign Christoph, followed by a number for rescue helicopters or the location it's stationed at for intensive care transport helicopters.
