Comparison of 2 Political Parties By: Sarah Colebank

History of Political Parties- The Democratic Party is the oldest political party in the United States and one of the oldest in the world, it goes back to 1792. When Thomas Jefferson first adopted the name Republican it was "to emphasize their anti monarchical views." During a statewide convention this term was first created for platforms and nominated candidates, it was decided to be labeled under the name Republican and was held near Jackson. It declared their new party was against expansion of slavery into new places that were undiscovered, their next job was to pick different people to run for states as candidates. ( video describing main differences in parties, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uc61kwWcLD8 )

Influential presidents of each Party- Abraham Lincoln was the most influential republican party. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the most influential democratic president

Realigning elections- This is when a party changes after a long period of being in office. 1800- republican democrats 1828- Jacksonian Democrats 1860- Republican- Abolintionists 1896- Democrats- populists Republican- City 1932- New deal Coalition Democrats ( Realigning elections in the USA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Q6cG-sDUJo )

History of Demographics of the Parties- Over the past 25yrs, the demographics of the U.S. have changed. America has become more diverse, less likely to be affiliated with one religion, more educated, and older. The demographic trends go along with different party affiliation, and among that demographic groups have changed the makeup of the Republican and Democratic parties. The Democratic and Republican Parties have been through a long a lot from their original ideological principles. The Democrats started out as the conservative party but are now the liberal party, and the Republicans were once the liberal party but are now the conservative party, these changes occurred between the 1860s and 1936.

My Political Party Affiliation- I think I am liberal because they mostly have to do with freedom and openness to change of the countries and individuals and that's how I think our country should be.

President That was Never Elected in the Democrat Party- Al Gore, He ran against Bush in the 2000 election and should have won. He won the popular vote but not other one. Bush was a republican and screwed up our government by starting the costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The role of third parties is to raise awareness for issues and take votes away from main parties. We have never had a third party win an election but it is possible

Democrats in Office- Sen. Bernie Sanders, Vermont Sen. Joe Manchin, Virginia Sen. Joe Donnelly, Indiana Sen. Claire McCaskill, Missouri Rep. Joe Crowley, New York

My opinion- I think that the political parties are a good thing when they give you a identity to align yourself with and give you the opportunity to learn about the ideologies, but I think that it can be a bad thing when you can’t look past another person's party. Sometimes the party issue can be so big that nothing gets done just because you don’t like the party even though their idea may be good also known as party polarization. I think the parties will continue to exist and grow in the division because people are not going to change overnight, I think in our future generation we should get rid of the party labels but as for now we should focus on getting along and working for a better future.
