ANANTHAPURAM-A HISTORICAL OUTLINE

Ananthapuram palace, one of the famous palace situated in the place Danapady of Haripadu, Alappuzha district of Kerala. Anathapuram is called as the second palace of Parappanadu royal family in Travancore. They first developed Settlement in Laxmipuram palace of Changanacherry of Kottayam. Ananthapuram palace was later build in 1871.Ananthapuram palace follows the matrilineal system inheritance and succession through the sister’s children in the female line. Ananthapuaram kings are called as "ANANTHAPURAM KOIL THAMBURAKANS". The main factor that makes Ananthapuram important is Kerala Varma lived there in detention by the order of Ayilyam Thirunal Maharaja of Travancore. There he planned to wrote famous poem MAYURASANDESHAM. A R RAJA RAJA VARMA who is a poet grammatarian and professor is also a member of Laxmipuramy palace. Lakshmipuram palace is called as the mother palace of parappanadu royal family in Travancore. Ithey was the seat of the royal family of Koil Thamburans and has produced many illustrio's writers, poets and famous persons.

HISTORY OF PARAPPANADU ROYAL FAMILY AND INVASION OF TIPPU SULTAN

Parappanadu was a former Hindu Feudal city state in Malabar,India.Parappanadu Kingdom was a dependent of zamorin of Calicut. Parappanadu royal family is also called chaliyum. At first it was called PARAPPANADU then later came to be known as Parappanadu.Umamba of Karipuranda kovilakom is believed as the common female ancestor. She doesn't wanted her ancestry to extinct,so they adopted princesses from Kolappurathu kovilakom and settled in Nediyel, Manayathu, Puthiyakovilakom, Panangotuand also from Thekkepattu of Malabar. In the middle of 18th century royal family of parappanadu Kingdom found political refuge to Travancore due to the invasion of Tippu sultan on 1788.Karthika Thirunal Maharaja of Travancore helped them and gave them Lakshmipuram palace to stay permanently.

GROWTH OF PARAPPANADU ROYAL FAMILY IN TRAVANCORE

The Parappanadu royal family settled in Travancore at Lakshmipuram palace , Changanacherry of Kottayam district of Kerala. It was the seat of the royal family of Koil Thamburans and has produced illustrious writers such as RAJA RAJA VARMA , KERALA VARMA VALIYA KOIL THAMBURAN, and noted malayalam and classical musician L P R VARMA. It is believed that 3 sisters of parappanadu royal family established root in Travancore. They were AMBA AMBIKA and AMBALIKA. Amba initiated to build another palace in Haripad in Ananthapuram. It was because of the strength in Laxmipuram palace increased so family of Amba shifted to Ananthapuram palace later built another palace near to Haripad.

KERALA VARMA VALIYA KOIL THAMBURAN (1845-1914)

Kerala Varma Valiya Koil Thamburan also known as KALIDASA of KERALA was born on 1845 February 19 at Laxmipuram palace Changanacherry, Kottayam district of Kerala. It is believed that his father was Cheriyur Mullapally Narayanan Namboothiri according to the great writer Sangunni Wariyer of Malayalam but according to the informations got from the family of Ananthappuarm claims that his father is Cheriyur Mullaserry Sankar Das Namboothiri. His mother was Pooyam Thirunal Devi Aamba Thamburati was a member of lakshmipuram palace of Changanacherry. He was married to his highness RANI Lakshmi Bai, the adopted niece of Utharm Thirunal, them maharaja of Travancore royal family in 1859.Later he became to known as kerala varma 'Valiya Koil Thamburan '. Later however, through palace intrigues and personal disaffection with the maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal he confined at Haripad forcefully in 1875 , only to be released and reunited with his wife in 1880 by maharaja Vishakam Thirunal. After the death of his consort Rani Lakshmi Bai in 1901 he was appointed the guardian of her two grandnieces the senior and junior Queens of Travancore, including Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bhai. He died in a car accident while travelling to Vaikom Mahadeva Temple with his nephew and disciple A.R Raja Raja Varma, another great scholar called as KERALA PANINI in September 1914. People from various spheres mourned his death. He was cremated with full state honours at his death at his home in Changanacherry. He loved education literature music and travelling. He was a great lover of musical instrument veena, when it is played by his wife and his elder brother cherunni. His hobbies were wrestling, chathuranga(chess) , martial arts , horse riding, music, hunting also mantras and puranas . Ramavaryar of Thiruvarppu was his Sanskrit teacher. He studied poems , grammar and English language. Subbhadhikshitar and Sreenu Ayankar Shasthrikal were his grammar teachers. They were also the members of Travancore royal court. He learnt logical science from Rama Swami Shasthrikal and Veda shastra from Ilathur Ramaswami Shastrikal. He learnt English from Dr.Wayring and Annajirayar. Abhijnana shakunthalam is one of the most acclaimed work of poetry in malayalam language . MAYURASANDESHAM Vishakavijayam were his important works which he wrote in the days of detention in Ananthapuram.

IMPORTANCE OF ANANTHAPURAM PALACE IN PRESENT SOCIETY

By this poem Varma invited lord YAMA the Lord of death according to Hindu purana to take maharaja to hell. In the 4th day of poem maharaja found death. He wrote MAYURASANDESHAM when he was in Ananthapuram. Ananthapuram palace is not under the controlley or protection of Kerala Government still the royal family lives in there with family. They preserve the palace nadakatte transfer knowledge and history of palace to the next generation. Palace have a great architectural style which have mural paintings , wood ceiling, longoing halls , typical well attachedone kitchen etc. Place is 16 kettu a architectural style of Kerala which that palaces have a open courtyard in the middle of the palace also called Nadu muttam. Ananthapuram have great influence in the socio cultural religious life of surrounding society.
