Rob Shanahan is an American photographer, musician, and keynote speaker noted for his photographs of musicians like Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Avril Lavigne, Eddie Van Halen, and Christina Aguilera. He has also been the chief photographer for the Yamaha Corporation since 2005.[1]

Early life and education

Rob was born in Norwood, Minnesota on May 8, 1966. Son of Robert and Rachel Shanahan, he is the third of four siblings.[2] He attended Central Public Schools where he started playing drums in the elementary school band.[3] In the 7th grade he was moved up to the senior high band and for the next 6 years played in the concert, marching, and jazz bands. His interest in photography started with his family’s 35mm Pentax camera during his high school years.[4][5] His senior year he was awarded the John Phillips Souza Award for outstanding band achievement given to one graduating senior.[2] After high school he attended Minnesota State University-Mankato where he studied business and continued with his photography.[6] After college, in July of 1988, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his photography and music career.[4]

Career

With over 30 years of professional experience, Shanahan and his work have appeared in publications around the world.[7] His record & CD cover credits include: Ringo Starr, Sheila E, Joe Bonamassa, YES, Steve Lukather, Gary Wright, ELO, and others. His first book, VOLUME 1 was released in 2012, with foreword by Ringo Starr. Other artists Rob photographed for VOLUME 1 include: Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Eddie Van Halen, Motley Crue, Avril Lavigne, Billy Squier, Christina Aguilera, Joe Walsh, Sarah McLachlan, Dave Grohl, Sheila E, Edgar Winter, Barry Manilow, Ben Harper, Neil Peart, Godsmack, YES, Sammy Hagar, and many others.[8]

He does speaking engagements at universities, galleries and photography schools across the country. His first corporate keynote speaking engagement was in February 2017 for CenturyLink, with special guest Sammy Hagar.[9]

He has been playing drums with the Hollywood Stones since 1994.[4]
