Biography

MY name is Janis Senkans, i was born in 1993. I was born in Latvia, where i lived for 16 years before moving to UK. After moving to uk i studiet IT in Goole college for 3 years. At this point I am studding "Design for Digital Media" at Hull University Scarborough campus.

Personal reflection

working in wikepedia was a real chalenge for me. when i started working on it i tought it would be easy but i underestimated how hard it actually is. The begining was easy, i know who are my groop members and i knew what we are doing. Although when i started to do actual work i strugled a lot as it was really hard to find a proper information source to us as reference. I find plentty of information to work with but it wasnt really realiable so i couldnt use it. i spend hours and hours just to Working in Wikipedia was a real challenge for me. When I started working on it I thought it would be easy but I underestimated how hard it actually was. The beginning was easy, I knew who my group member was and I knew what we were doing. I enjoyed working in group as we always could help each other with an advice. Although, when I started to do actual work I struggled a lot as it was really hard to find a proper information source to use as a reference. I found plenty of information to work with but it wasn’t very reliable so I couldn’t use it. I spent hours and hours just to find a couple of reliable news articles but even those contained so little information in them about the topic I needed that it was basically useless to mention them. I learned a lot from this experience as well as find out new ways how to search the information in the web. To make the work easier and more effective, we decided to narrow the research and each of us took one small field of information to look for. Slowly and surely I started to gather bibliography and put the article together. I found the cheetsheet really useful, as I didn’t know anything about editing Wikipedia articles. The first problem that accrued when I was adding my part to the article was that the other member of the group was uploaded some new information to the article. My mistake was that I was doing editing already in the article, but not in the sandbox. As a result, when I tried to save the changes, everything I had done disappeared. So after that I did all the editing in a sandbox. Another problem accrued when proofreading my and my member’s articles and I noticed that they had some information repeating. We discussed together where that specific information should go and made some changes after that. When reading one of the news articles I noticed that some of the information I had gathered could be used in the paragraph done by the other member of our group. I wrote down the matching information, proof red it and referenced it. Linking words/terms or references were also tricky to do. Most of the work went smoothly but then I faced another problem. I had to put 2 references (to the website and to the information source) to the same word. Experimenting with linking options for a bit I eventually managed to do that. Someone else not related to the IEE course also edited our article. The changes he/she made were small but really useful, and they solved some problems I had with the article. After that I used the Wikipedia talk option to say thanks to the mysterious person. After all that work done it was really satisfying and pleasing to type in SMHC in google and see article which my group created. find couple of reliable news articles or but even thoughs had so little of information in them about topic i need that it was basiccly usless to mention them.
