The 2006-07 Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team, coached by Pat Summitt was an NCAA Division I basketball team, that went 34-3 in route to a national championship, their seventh. Led by Candace Parker, this title gave the program, which had won six titles in twelve years, their first title since 1998.
Preseason edit
The Lady Vols started off the season with a 104-49 exhibition win over Carson-Newman. Tennessee shot 58.9% from the field while forcing Carson-Newman to 36 turnovers. 6 team members scored in double figures, lead by Alexis Hornbuckle, who scored 21 points in 29 minutes.[1] In their other exhibition match, against the women's travel team the Houston Jaguars, the team won by fifty, 101-51. Tennessee grabbed 21 steals and Candace Parker and Alex Fuller both posted double-doubles in route to the win.[2]
Regular Season edit
Chattanooga, UCLA, and Arizona State edit
In the season opener against in-state opponent Chattanooga, Tennessee was able to pull away after making a big run towards the end of the first half. Prior to this, the Mocs had played even with the Vols. Chattanooga's Hand led all scorers with 20 points; Alexis Hornbuckle's 19 points led Tennessee, who had six scorers in double digits.[3]
Tennessee's first match against a nationally-ranked opponent came in only their second game, against 20th-ranked UCLA. UT was helped by 26 Bruin turnovers as well as a 10-0 run to open the second half. Parker led all scorers with 22 points as Tennessee won 83-60.[4]
The Lady Vols followed up the UCLA win with a trip out to Tempe, AZ, against #11 Arizona State. Up by four at the break, Tennessee went on a 15-3 run midway through the second half to give them a 67-51 lead. Tennessee added another ten straight points after Arizona State's leading scorer Emily Westerberg went out with her fourth foul, to give them a 24 point lead. Arizona began cutting the lead as time winded down, but Tennessee held on for an 83-74 victory. Parker led all scorers with 25 points, and added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.[5]
Stanford, MTSU, and Louisiana Tech edit
The Lady Vols returned home for a match with 11th-ranked Stanford. Tennessee took the lead in the first half with a Candace Parker dunk, followed by her first three-pointer of the year. Up seven at half-time, Tennessee was able to extend its lead; however, Stanford cut the lead down to nine with 8:02. Sidney Spencer responded with a three and, after the teams traded a few baskets, a Tennessee 6-0 run put the game away, as Tennessee won 77-60 to remain undefeated. Parker led all scorers with 25 points and made her fourth career dunk. [6]
After the Stanford win, Tennessee faced in-state foe MTSU. Down 10-5, Tennessee began to force turnovers and was able to take a 14-13 lead. This was followed up with a 10-0 run. Although MTSU was able to cut the lead to 7, the Lady Vols followed with a 9-0 run, and took a 49-27 lead into the break. The final score was 88-64. Candace Parker and Sidney Spencer led scoring with 16 points a piece. [7]
