Technovision is an italian motion picture equipment company specialized in renting cameras and lenses. Founded by Henryk Chroscicki, under other company names such as ATC in the early fifties and ECE in the late sixties, Technovision was first registered as a trademark in 1976 (1) and has since then been known in the industry mainly for its lenses. Henryk Chroscicki, born in Poland in 1919 (2), then emigrated to Australia, and finally settled down in Italy, where he graduated at the Centro Sperimentale (3) – Film School in Rome as a Cinematographer. Beside his cinematographic engagements he also ran a precision machine shop together with his partner Alfonso Sansone where most of the camera and grip accessories were manufactured. At that time most of the major rental houses created their own accessories around the different camera systems, since the manufacturers did not provide much of it; in these years amongst other equipment, a viewfinder for the Arriflex IIC was built, known as Fellini Door; Mitchell cameras were rehoused in Technovision’s workshop. Other remarkable items which entered the filmmarket and created under Technovision’s direction are the compact gear head named “Technohead” and the first telescopic Filmcrane called “Technocrane “ However, HC.’s main efforts were concentrated on lenses. In competition with other anamorphic lens systems, like Cinemascope or later Panavision H.C. developped his own anamorphic lenses called Totalscope.(4) Filming Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita” with Totalscope lenses helped this widescreen system to achieve international success.(5) H.C. worked around the anamorphic double lens system looking for tecnical improvements and finally succeeded in creating a single anamorphic lens system called Technovision, first registered in 1976. Technovision anamorphic lenses gained popularity immediately, so that Lucchino Visconti and his dop Pasqualino De Santis used it for shooting “The Innocent” in 1976 and Dario Argento together with his cinematographer Luciano Tovoli chose Technovison for shooting one of the world’s most screened horror films called “Suspiria”. The big international breakthrough came with the release of “Apocalypse Now“directed by F.F. Coppola and filmed by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. In 1976 Harald Buggenig joined Technovision, and his entry enabled the company to expand and open new branches: first in England at Twickenham Film Studios as Technovision Cameras LTD under direction of David Pringle, then in 1984 a branch in Milan and in the early 90’s another prestigious rental facility in Paris called Technovision S.A. headed with success by Natasza Chroscicki, (Henryk’ daughter) until the french branch was purchased by Panavision. (6) From 1976 onwards, hundreds of motion pictures were filmed with Technovision lenses; following is a list of the most important classified by year of public release. (7)
Some of them were honored with winning an Oscar for best Cinematography: Vittorio Storaro for “Apocalypse Now” in 1979, for “Reds” in 1981 and finally for “The Last Emperor” in 1987; David Watkin for filming “Out of Africa” in 1985.
In 1996 Harald Buggenig takes over Technovision brand and with it the registered Trademark. (8)
The growing influence of digital cameras in the film market competing with traditional analogic film cameras inspired Technovision’s management to create a new company named D-Vision in order to follow up with the new technologies in 2004 and later both companies merged.
After a moderately quiet period for anamorphic lens systems the appearance in 2012 of the Alexa camera with a 4:3 sensor (9), created by Arrigroup, brought new life to anamorphic lenses.
