Who are you??? Tell us about yourself.
- Well, I'm not sure who left that question, but I will say that I live in the United States. I have an interest in novels, which is reflected in my articles on two of Patrick O'Brian's books. History is another interest. I find Wikipedia a wonderful resource, and my hat is off to the volunteers who give their time to see that the privilege of universal editorship is not abused -- in fact, to all of the volunteers who have created and maintain this enormous online encyclopedia.Hammerdrill (talk) 20:48, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

Changing information referred to between double brackets edit
I am going to create an article about a Patrick O'Brian novel. I would like to add the box above the categories that contains other titles, but first I need to add this novel to the list. I don't know how to access the titles. There are double brackets (these: "{") around the following text: PatrickOBrianWorks. If you want to edit the template you can go to Template:PatrickOBriansWork and just edit it. But please be careful editing templates (use Preview!) as any change you make affects multiple articles. —Noah 00:12, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
(edit conflict) That's called a "navigation box" or "navigation template." See WP:NAVBOX. You will have to edit the
(note the correct spelling) navigation template. If you can't figure out how to do that, tell us the name of the novel you want to add to the navigation template, and someone here can add it for you. Another option is to add a comment to Template talk:PatrickOBriansWork stating specifically what you would like to add, and someone else who watches that template can add it for you. If you mess up the template, you can mess up every page that transcludes it, so this is kind of a high-risk thing to try if you have not done it before. Just be ready to revert your changes if you screw it up. Or better yet, test your edits by copying the template to a user subpage such as User:Hammerdrill/Sandbox where you can experiment with no risk. --Teratornis (talk) 00:15, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Book Cover image for infobox edit
I am putting together everything for an infobox on an article on a novel, The Road to Samarcand. I have looked at examples of other infoboxes of novels, and they often have likenesses of the covers. Would all of these pictures have been uploaded to Wikimediacommons, or is there another way to put images into infoboxes? I'm completely stuck about how to answer the licensing questions in order to upload the cover image, which I scanned, into Wikimediacommons. If anyone has experience with book covers in infoboxes, I would really appreciate some pointers. Thank you! Hammerdrill (talk) 04:39, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Only free images can be uploaded to commons. Few if any book covers are free. So they have to be uploaded on English Wikipedia with a {{non-free book cover}} tag and a {{book cover fur}} non-free use rationale. —teb728 t c 04:47, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- In addition to the advice you received at the help desk, you might want to look at an existing book cover with proper documentation. I always find it easier to work from a good example and simply modify for my own purposes. Please see Image:Revenge of the Lawn.jpg. If you upload a book cover, you can simply copy (while in edit mode of course) and paste the content from that page to the image page you create, and tailor just the few parameters that would change for your image upload.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 16:35, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

In case you still need some ideas on how to do book covers, take a look at what I did on my latest article on a book. Apparently it seems to be about correct since I have not had any complaints on The Whole Shebang: A State-of-the-Universe(s) Report and the book cover image of 100px put on English Wikipedia with a {{non-free book cover}} tag and a {{book cover fur}} non-free using a rationale. Normally you can NOT put a book cover on Wikipedia Commons (where normally all other pictures go) UNLESS it is a really old book, like before 1923. I am NOT an expert on this, however other editors certainly are. Just giving you this for ideas.--Doug Coldwell talk 13:25, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

- Sure thing. WP:CSD#A1 is the criterion for the speedy deletion of articles that don't give the reader any indication of what they're about. When I saw it at Special:NewPages, your article only had the song title, without any indication of what it was; since I recognized the title, I figured it wasn't vandalism and you'd be along shortly to put in more content. Patrollers on that page can be somewhat quick to tag new articles, and I wanted to stop anyone from doing that before you had a chance to fill in the rest of the article.
- Incidentally, when you make a new article, you can make a final copy in your userspace and then move it to mainspace with the "move" tab, rather than create a new page and then copy the content into it. (This will create a redirect in your userspace, but if you still need a userpage with that title you can undo that.) That way, you can put the whole article, nice and neat, in the mainspace as soon as you create it; you'll also avoid problems with overzealous NewPages patrollers.

I used Defaultsort: It's a 'magic word' template that will show the software how to sort an article in all of its categories. It's usually at the top of the list of categories, but I honestly don't know if the placement matters.
