In 2012, musician and filmmaker brothers Justin and James Lockley of Hand Held Cinema Club, who also played in Editors and Minor Victories, respectively, asked to help record Pedestrian Verse on video.[1] Four years later, the two sets of brothers were in Berlin when they began to contemplate forming a supergroup.[2] On April 6, 2018, the Hutchisons and Lockleys released Dance Music, a grunge album under the name Mastersystem.[3] Mastersystem's heavy use of electric guitars and distortion was a departure from Frightened Rabbit's acoustic rock, and Hutchison told Stereogum that the project was his attempt to take the rock sounds of his teenage years and upgrade them to an adult audience.[4] Hutchison was further excited about the prospect of playing Mastersystem songs live, telling NME, "These [concerts] can't be any longer than 45 minutes so what's the point in holding anything back? It should be fucking carnage."[5]
