Handprint turkey by a Kindergarten student
Handprint turkey activity

Handprint turkeys or Hand turkeys are a Thanksgiving tradition as well as a popular arts and crafts activity for children, involving tracing the hand to create an image of a turkey. The first through fourth fingers represent feathers with an eye and beak added to the thumb to make its neck and head.[1] There are many variations on this basic concept. Another common technique involves printing the hand by covering it in paint and pressing it onto paper.[2]

Handprint turkeys are often used to introduce the story of Thanksgiving to children as well as the significance the turkey plays in the holiday. Graham and Camp suggest that the activity also increases a child's self-image.[1]
