Starting in the 1880s, Grant became a pioneer of the gear cutting industry. He published articles on his innovations in gear cutting machinery in journals such as American Machinist, and received patents for new inventions such as U.S. Patents #405,030 and #407,437, both awarded in 1889. He also started companies such as Grant Gear Works, Lexington Gear Works, Boston Gear Works, and Philadelphia Gear Works.
