Natsu Dragneel (ナツ・ドラグニル, Natsu Doraguniru) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Fairy Tail created by Hiro Mashima. He is the primary male protagonist and is the first friend Lucy Heartfilia makes on her journey. He is accompanied by Happy, a flying cat. During Natsu's early childhood, he is raised by a dragon named Igneel. After Igneel's disappearance seven years before the series' present, Natsu joins Fairy Tail and decides to find the dragon.

Character description edit

Appearance edit

Natsu is an average height teenager with a muscular build. He has spiky pink-colored hair with black eyes. His Fairy Tail guild mark is red and located near his right shoulder. It is also known that Natsu has several scars on his neck and abdomen from fights he encountered throughout the series. He changes his outfit for different occasions throughout the story, but the style of his outfits tends to remain the same. His regular style consists of a sleeveless dark-colored waistcoat that exposes his bare chest, light-colored knee-length trousers, a black wristband, and black sandals. In addition, he will always wear a scale patterned scarf that was given to him by his adoptive father, Igneel.

Personality edit

Natsu is usually very laid-back and carefree, especially around his friends. He also has a strong sense of justice and does whatever is morally good. Despite his good nature, he can be very oblivious and reckless. He often destroy properties belonging to others while on missions or gets into fights with other members of Fairy Tail. Even though Natsu considers Fairy Tail his family, he is always challenging other members, such as Gray Fullbuster and Erza Scarlet, into fights because he wants to prove his strength and become the strongest mage in his guild. However, he is actually very loyal and protective of his friends. When Natsu or his friends are faced with danger or disrespect, Natsu can become very angry and prefer to solve his problems with brute force and violence rather than communication. Nevertheless, Natsu will often show compassion or forgive his enemies, such as when Cobra was betrayed by Brain. Natsu also dislike transportation because he suffers from motion sickness due to having Dragon Slayer magic. He will become sick on every form of transportation, such as a train or a ship. (With the exception Wendy's sickness spell)

Abilities edit

Natsu is a Dragon Slayer (ドラゴンスレイヤー, Doragon Sureiyā), which means that he can perform an ancient form of magic, or "Lost Magic", that grants him the physical properties of a dragon. The Fire Dragon Slayer magic (火の滅竜魔法, Ka no Metsuryū mahō) allows him to breathe fire, emit flames from any part of his body to attack, become physically immune to fire, and ingest any flame for nourishment. He learned how to use this type of magic from the dragon, Igneel. When he consumes magical substances that contain a large amount of magical energy, such as Etherion or the Flame of Rebuke, Natsu is able to achieve a more powerful form of Dragon Slayer magic called Dragon Force (ドラゴンフォース, Doragon Fōsu), which turns his skin around his eyes and on his forearms scaly, and increases both his physical and magical power. Dragon Force is known to be comparable to that of a real Dragon and is often considered to be the strongest state a Dragon Slayer can attain. With Dragon Force, Natsu can temporarily eat other forms of magic and combine that with his own; however, Natsu becomes sick for several days after his transformation wears off. When Natsu absorbed Laxus Dreyar's lightning magic during the battle against Hades, Natsu gained the ability of Lightning Flame Dragon Mode (モード雷炎竜, Mōdo Raienryū). The lightning magic fused with Natsu's flames to create a stronger version of Dragon Slayer magic, so Natsu can temporarily use Fire Dragon Slayer magic enhanced with lightning attributes. This magic is shown to be very powerful and destructive. Similar to Dragon Force, this magic drains all of the user's magic and leaves the user very exhausted.

Plot overview edit

Natsu arrived in a town after receiving tip that a "Salamander" has been spotted.[1] The "Salamander" turned out to be an impostor that has been charming women. Natsu ended up saving all the women, including a traveling mage named Lucy Heartfilia, from the impostor's influence. After finding out that Lucy wants to join Natsu's guild, Fairy Tail, Natsu invites her to join, in which she accepts. They started to become close friends, along with Erza Scarlet and Gray Fullbuster. Later on, Natsu, Lucy, Erza, and Gray went on a mission and stopped the dark guild, Eisenwald, from using the powerful Lullaby flute to eliminate all of the guild masters.[2]

In another mission, Natsu and his friends sneaked off to the cursed Galuna Island.[3] The Fairy Tail team eventually stopped Lyon Vastia, from reviving the demon, Deliora. Upon returning from the Galuna Island mission, Natsu finds his guild and friends attacked by another guild.[4] Angered by these attacks, Natsu furiously leads the charge to the perpetrator, who turns out to be Phantom Lord. Natsu gets into a fight with the Iron Dragon Slayer, Gajeel Redfox, but the battle ended abruptly after Fairy Tail's master, Makarov Dreyar, is seemingly defeated by Phantom Lord's master, Jose Porla. When Jose turned his headquarters into a weapon, Natsu and his friends attacked the enemy's headquarters and defeated Phantom Lord's strongest mages, including Gajeel.

After receiving tickets to a resort, Erza and Happy was kidnapped while Natsu and his friends went to a casino.[5] Natsu tracked them down and ended up at the abandoned Tower of Heaven. Natsu saved Happy by defeating Millianna and Wally. However, Natsu lost to Fukuro when Natsu became unconscious due to motion sickness. He soon wakes up and heads to the top of the tower where Jellal Fernandez is located. Luckily, Natsu arrived just in time to save Erza from being absorbed into a magical Lacrima. At first, Jellal has the upper hand in the battle, but Natsu defeated him with the power of Dragon Force after consuming some of the magical Lacrima.

During the Harvest Festival, Laxus Dreyar and his bodyguards forced Fairy Tail members to battle each other.[6] When Natsu wanted to leave the guild to enter the fray, he was surprisingly stopped by a magical barrier. After the barrier was released by Levy McGarden, Natsu quickly found Laxus. Natsu and his new ally, Gajeel, worked together and stopped Laxus' terror on Fairy Tail. A few weeks after the Harvest Festival, Natsu and his friends were chosen to represent Fairy Tail for the legal guild alliance to defeat the dark guild, Oración Seis.[7] Much to Natsu's surprise, Oración Seis knew about the alliance and attacked first. Natsu defeats one of the Oración Seis member, Cobra, while the rest of the alliance takes down four other dark mages. When Fairy Tail confronts the master of the Oración Seis, Brain, it is revealed that Brain has another personality called Zero. Zero nearly destroys all of the alliance members, but with the help of Jellal, Natsu enters Dragon Force once again and knocks out Zero.

Awhile later, Natsu reunites with Gildarts Clive, but their reunion ended abruptly after Fairy Tail was absorbed into the parallel world, Edolas.[8] In Edolas, Natsu happily finds out that Lisanna Strauss was still alive and also meets his parallel counterpart, Natsu the Fireball. Once again, Natsu and his friends saved Edolas' kingdom by besting the mad king, Faust, and his knights. In the end, Natsu pretends to be a villain, so Mystogan, who turns out to be the king's son, can become the savior of the kingdom. After the guild has been restored from the Edolas incident, Makarov announced that a S-Class Mage Promotion Trial will be held soon with Natsu as one of the participants.[9] Natsu, with Happy as his partner, completed the first trial, despite losing to Gildarts. The second trial was however, interrupted when Grimoire Heart, invaded Tenrou Island. Natsu defended the island by winning battles against Zancrow and Grimoire Heart's master, Hades, with the help of Laxus' lightning magic. However, just as Fairy Tail begin to recover from the previous battle, Acnologia appears and prepares to annihilate all of the mages. With no other choice, all of the Fairy Tail members join hands in hope of a miracle.

Seven years later, Natsu and the rest of the Fairy Tail members were found when Blue Pegasus and the remaining Fairy Tail mages searched for them.[10] With the assistance of Jellal and Ultear Milkovich's magic, Natsu and his allies became strong enough to enter the Grand Magic Games. In one of the rounds, Natsu came in third-to-last place in a race that requires the participants to be on mobile vehicles, much to Natsu's dismay. In another round, Natsu and Gajeel won their two-on-two battle against Sabertooth's Sting Eucliffe and Rogue Cheney, despite Natsu fighting most of the battle by himself. Because of his victory, Fairy Tail obtained first place for the first time in the tournament.

Appearances in other media edit

Besides his appearance in the original manga series and its anime adaptation, Natsu has also starred in other Fairy Tail works. He has appeared in the featured film of the series, Phoenix Priestess.[11] He also appears in six different original animated videos, including a special crossover with Rave Master, another series created by Hiro Mashima.[12] In the Fairy Tail video games, Natsu is a playable character in every game, including the Portable Guild series.[13][14] Natsu's voice actor, Tetsuya Kakihara, is also featured in an internet radio program airing on HiBiKi Radio Station on February 11, 2012.[15]
