I'm ErThomas1 (Elfie). I am a third-year Art History student (BA) at the University of Sussex. My studies have concentrated on the art of British Empire, the Imagery of Slavery and Abolition and Museum Studies. In 2020, I conducted a research project on Mahdist textiles in partnership with the University of Sussex, The Making African Connections Project and The Royal Engineers Museum. The project had an object-focus on Mahdist jibbah, tunics worn by Ansar (followers of al-Mahdi) in conflicts during the Mahdist war in Sudan at the end of the 19th C. One of the aims of the project was to estimate the amount of Sudanese jibbah existing in UK cultural institutions and to locate, record and publish a list of these artefacts to make them knowable to source communities or anyone searching for Sudanese heritage in UK institutions [1].
