Welcome!

Hello, ElAmericano, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions; I hope you like the place and decide to stay. We're glad to have you in our community! Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Though we all make mistakes at some point, here is what Wikipedia is not, which might help you out. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to see the help pages, add a question to the village pump, or ask me. The Community Portal can also be very useful.

Vote . . . And what now?

From User talk:Cryptic

As I said, I've never done a VfD before (this is my first) and I was wondering, when does the discussion turn into a reality, ie, a deletion or merger? I suppose the answer is different depending on which it is? Thanks. ElAmericano 03:45, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

From the current backlog at WP:AFD/Old, it looks like it might take as long as another four or five days. Or it might happen sooner, if it catches the eye of an interested administrator before then, but it almost certainly won't be closed before tomorrow. —Cryptic (talk) 03:57, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. I wasn't sure if I had to do anything or not. - ElAmericano 04:27, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

Hm . . . Problem?

From User talk:Jmabel

Could you take a look at the following; I just found this today:

Do we need to take care of this? (It really ticks me off.) Thanks. - ElAmericano | talk 13:27, Wednesday, May 22, 2024 (UTC)

I don't see any problem. It looks like a compliant mirror. It links to Wikipedia, acknowledges as the source of the material, indicates that the content is GFDL, and provides a link to the GFDL license. Am I missing something? -- Jmabel | Talk 06:23, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Oh, I didn't see that at the bottom and didn't know that was okay, but I'm relieved. I thought our article was going to need revamping or something. - ElAmericano | talk 13:27, Wednesday May 22 2024 (UTC)

Antoni Gaudí

From User talk:Joan sense nick

- ElAmericano 12:20, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Cordialmente, --Joan sense nick 09:48, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism

From User talk:Acetic Acid

I just joined the CVU and was wondering, how do we deal with second- or third-count vandalism? (Possibly more). 72.244.64.173 vandalized my home page after (I think) I fixed another of his vandalisms. I noticed you mentioned previous vandalism on his user talk page. At what point to we do something about that? - ElAmericano 16:13, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

First off, allow me to welcome you to CVU! As for multiple accounts of vandalism, here's what I do:
  • First offense - Post {{bv}} on their talk page
  • Second offense - {{test4}} on talk page
  • Third offense - Since I'm an administrator, I can block them for 24 hours (I sometimes make the block shorter if it is a AOL IP or other form of proxy as this block could affect innocent users).
Since you aren't an admin, you can ask for assistance at either WP:VIP (caution, response here may be slow) or WP:AIV (faster response). Acetic'Acid 05:36, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. I look forward to being a part of CVU. - ElAmericano | talk 05:41, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
We're glad to have you. Have you checked out the IRC channel? (#wikipedia-en-vandalism) It's a grand asset to reverting vandalism. Acetic'Acid 05:43, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, ElAmericano/storage/talkarchives1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member, you might be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. A spam list is maintained by Redwolf24 to keep members up to date; you might want to consider adding your name to the list. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Essjay, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of myself, Flcelloguy, Ryan Norton, and Acetic Acid. The next set of elections will be at the end of the year, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact me via email or talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to be!

Gaudí revisions

From User talk:Jmabel

I like the way you changed the endnotes to footnotes in the Gaudí article. Could you explain exactly what you did and what those templates mean? Thanks. - ElAmericano 01:29, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

Have a look at Wikipedia:Footnotes. My guess is that will answer all of your questions. -- Jmabel | Talk 06:39, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

Vertically expanding tables

From User talk:ClockworkSoul

I've asked this question both at the Village pump and at the Meta:Help_talk:Table without getting a response. It may be that the question is obvious, or maybe people are just busy. Regardless, it appears you have a handle on tables and I was wondering, how do I make my table cells expand vertically to, say, 99% of the height of the parent container? Specifically, why isn't this working? (I want everything lined up.) Thanks for any advice you can give. - ElAmericano | talk 04:19, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

  • Hi, ElAmericano. I see what you're trying to do, and I think I can help you. What you're doing is emulating my setup on my home page, but placing <div&gr; tags within the individual templates. Give me a minute, and I'll see if I can push you in the right direction. – ClockworkSoul 04:27, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
  • Okay, I got it. I made some example changes to the page you linked to, just to set you in the right direction. In a nutshell, you put div boxes inside each cell, and each div shrunk to its own minimum size. What I did was to remove the div from the templates and just put the individual characteristics into the cells themselves. Hope that helps! – ClockworkSoul 04:41, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
  • You can always count on a quick, effective response from me when I'm avoiding work. ;) Cheers! – ClockworkSoul 04:48, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

IP blocking

Hello, The IP address range you use is unfortunately also used by a vandal which sometimes results in it being temporarily blocked. It's now unblocked. -- Curps 07:11, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

It would be good if there was some way to recognize "users in good standing" who could keep editing even if there is a block on the IP address. Unfortunately that's something that requires a Mediawiki software change, that is, it's something that the developers would have to implement, it's not something that administrators can do. The software upgraded only a few days ago, but as far as I know, that particular change wasn't one of the changes. Right now things are quiet so hopefully the problem won't recur in the future. -- Curps 22:54, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism from 63.19.128.0/17

Hello, My apologies, but the vandal who uses the same ISP as you has become completely unmanageable, and it is necessary to place a long block on this IP range (or very frequent short blocks). I'm not sure what advice I can give you.

Unless you're willing to change ISPs, you may wish to contact your ISP and ask them to kick this person off their list of customers. We don't know this person's name, but they do.

The contact information that UUNET Technologies publishes for abuse reports is:

Phone: +1-800-900-0241
E-mail: abuse-mail@mci.com

The information you can provide to them is:

IP address: 63.19.219.212
Timestamp: 19:48 EST, 31 December 2005
IP address: 63.19.143.3
Timestamp: 19:43 EST, 31 December 2005

(This is the same person.)

There are many hundreds if not thousands of other examples, but these are just the latest two and should be sufficient for your ISP to identify this person.

Unless the ISP does something to prevent this person from vandalizing Wikipedia, anyone using the 63.19.128.0/17 IP range will have difficulties editing Wikipedia. -- Curps 23:03, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

La constitución española

From User talk:Miguel

- ElAmericano | talk 01:39, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Media bias thoughts

From User talk:Rick Norwood

Rick, I've been blocked from editing lately because of a vandal on my IP, so the following may seem to be somewhat of a delayed reaction. These thoughts are in regards to the Media bias in the United States article. First, I wanted to make sure you understood about the whole "High school research paper" comment earlier: That was not meant as an insult, but rather as a distinction. (In retrospect, this was admittedly a poor choice on my part.)

Second, thanks for all your work, not only on the media bias article, but also on Wikipedia in general.

Third, as I explain here, I still can't support the conclusion section. It isn't anything personal – I know you've worked hard on it – but rather a judgment I have to make as a Wikipedia contributor. All I ask is that you consider what I've said and give me insight into anything I may have missed in my analysis. Best of luck with all your work here. - ElAmericano | talk 04:53, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Sorry to hear about your being blocked.
Of course, I give serious consideration to what you say. When I'm right, I don't learn anything new. When I'm wrong, and find out about it, that's when I learn something. Rick Norwood 13:35, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition

From User talk:Doug Bell

Do you really think this article needs to be merged with Java Platform? I'm not sure I see your reasoning. There's the Java platform, which is composed of J2SE, J2EE, and J2ME. Each is sufficiently large that it merits its own main article. Am I missing something? - ElAmericano | talk 19:06, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

I got interrupted adding my rationale...see Talk:Java platform for my reasoning. – Doug Bell talkcontrib 19:19, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Java.lang deletion

From User talk:Babajobu

Thanks for deleting the java.lang article, as per my AfD. I was wondering, would you mind deleting the java.lang.reflect article, as well, as per here. (We came to that consensus.) - ElAmericano | talk 22:19, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Normally if more than one article is to be deleted, they should both/all be listed in the title of the AfD. Still, I went ahead and deleted the second article as well. Regards, Babajobu 00:47, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind. - ElAmericano | talk 20:24, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Just a quick comment

First, I want to say it's awful that you get blocked along with NCV. Silly people ruining hard-working editors work. Second, I just want to say you have a nice user page. I don't really have anything to say, just thought you might like a little feedback. Cheers. --LV (Dark Mark) 16:08, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the compliment and sympathy. I do appreciate the feedback and enjoy working with you here on Wikipedia. - ElAmericano | talk 17:47, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

More talk about the conclusion of Media bias, etc. . . .

From User talk:Rick Norwood

A question: Would you take offense if I added a conclusion section to the School choice article, using Harvard's analysis to prove that it is, indeed, beneficial, and using the Supreme Court's decisions to support the idea that it is constitutional and non-discriminatory? I could, if we were to use your business model, but I don't. I have researched the topic and know I am right about it, but most poor people and 'regular' students don't understand the concept properly. Am I going to fix America through Wikipedia? Is that my job here? Just a question.- ElAmericano | talk 04:24, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Your suggested addition to the School choice article sounds excellent to me. Yes, by all means, add it. If there is any objection, I'll visit the article talk page to add my support. Rick Norwood 13:50, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

From User talk:ViolinGirl

Hey Phaedriel/ViolinGirl, I just wanted to say that, in looking through Esperanza news, I stumbled upon the User Page contest and, seeing your page, was definitely impressed. Not only is it beautiful, but I think your personality shows through. Of course, I really don't know you that well, but it's just a feeling. I look forward to working with you here. - ElAmericano | talk 14:39, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Wait, I'm confused. Do you have anything to do with Phaedriel? It seems like your pages redirected to each other, but now they appear separate. Am I losing my mind? - ElAmericano | talk 17:02, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Another comment: Reading your statement was interesting to me because that's exactly what I have gone through. I started being active with Wikipedia last fall and was excited about user pages, vandalism, welcoming, NPOV, etc. Over Christmas, I found that the real world is much more important. I started not hanging out with my friends as much, and they noticed. Now, I'm to the point where if I have truly free time, I'm willing to come and have a little fun. Just wanted to let you know there are others out there going through the same things. - ElAmericano | talk 19:57, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for leaving a message at my talk page (actually, the three messages! ;)) I'm not sure what was going on with Phaedriel and my pages...is it working better now? Thanks for the compliment on my page...Tito was the designer, he gave it to me as a gift. So, any compliments should go to him. :) Isn't Phaedriel's page lovely?
Also, thanks so much for talking to me about User:ViolinGirl/Statement. It's harder to do than what it sounds like, isn't it? I decided that if I have to study (and use Wikipedia), I'm going to sign out, so I don't even see if I get any new messages. It helps me focus better. Then, I just sign in at night once, to check it over, make sure everything's going okay :), and then I'm done.
Oh, and your logo thing ^^ up there at the top looks really great!--ViolinGirl 00:24, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the compliment; and excellent idea about only signing in at night. And about you and Phaedriel's user pages, I think I'm just tired. I looked back at the links that "weren't working," and I'm pretty sure they're fine. I'm going to get sleep. - ElAmericano | talk 01:25, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Wikipeda User Page Award

I've nominated your User Page for the User Page Award. I hope you don't mind. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 17:50, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Well done! It looks like you're through to the second round! smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 20:01, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Hey there....

Congratulations, ElAmericano/storage/talkarchives1! Your user page has been nominated for the Esperanza User Page Award! Five judges will look over your user page and award it 1-10 points in four categories:

  • Attractiveness: general layout, considering colour scheme and/or use of tables if applicable
  • Usefulness: links to subpages or editing aids, helpful information
  • Interesting-ness: quirky, unique, captivating, or funny content
  • General niceness: at the judges' discretion

But first, you must be chosen as a finalist. If your user page is chosen as one of the five finalists, you'll have the chance to win an award created just for having a great user page!

More information can be found on this page.
