I am a journalist, historian and the author of seven books. My main field is American history. I have written extensively about the Vietnam War and Vietnam veterans, World Wars I and II, the history of the American flag, the U.S. Civil War, and other topics. My full-time job is a free-lance writer; I also teach a U.S. history class at Lord Fairfax Community College in Warrenton, Virginia.

To name a few: The New York Times, Washington Post, New York Times Book Review, New York Newsday, Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor, the Arizona Republic, Baltimore Sun, Chicago Tribune, Military History magazine, Smithsonian, Civil War Times Illustrated, and Preservation. I have contributed to the Encyclopedia Americana, the Encyclopedia Americana Yearbook, the Oxford Encyclopedia of American Political and Legal History, and the Dictionary of Virginia Biography.
