Dorsal Phinn was born Joe Robert McCabe II on June 2, 1969, in Miami, Florida, to a professional baseball player (catcher Minnesota Twins'64) and a Delta flight attendant. Encouraged by his mother, his first performances were singing "Rhinestone Cowboy" in talent shows at the age of 7. Through to High School, he studied guitar, piano, drums and bass; collaborated with friends to form rock bands to play dances and college parties; all while ranked in state Top Ten diving. His biggest influences were Pop Muzik, The Beatles and Megadeth. Dorsal Phinn studied for 12 years, earning two degrees, traveled, then wrote his first song, "Closer to You" at the age of 30. He was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in 2006 and served as a Battle Captain in Mosul, Iraq 2008.
