Supporters edit

In April 2009, Neville Howard and Gavin Norman created an independent supporter group to grow awareness of the bid at a grassroots level. The group organized via popular social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter. They currently have 3,100 Facebook fans[58] and 210 twitter followers.[59]

After the license was awarded to Australia and subsequently Melbourne, Victoria, the group has now become the Rebel Army.[60]

Rebels' training and administration will be based in Carlton North, in specially upgraded facilities at Princes Park stadium, which also hosts the Carlton Football Club.[61][62]

The Rebels will play all eight home games at AAMI Park on Friday nights at 7:40pm, during their inaugural season.[63] The stadium had been conceived in the previously unsuccessful Victorian bids for a Super rugby team.[64] It was designed by Cox Architects (Sydney), with input from Waratah and former Wallaby prop Al Baxter.[65] AAMI Park was officially opened 8 May 2010 with a rugby league test between Australia and New Zealand[66] which drew 29,442 spectators.[67] The Rebels' co-tenants will be Melbourne Victory (soccer), Melbourne Heart (soccer) and Melbourne Storm (rugby league). A recent Melbourne Victory testimonial game drew a crowd of 5,000 (May 14, 2010).[68][69]

2011 season edit

The 2011 Super Rugby season kicks off 18 February 2011. The Rebels' fist competition match is against the Waratahs (NSW) at AAMI Park. But first there's a pre-season game against the Crusaders (New Zealand), 5 February 2011, also at AAMI Park.[70]
