Fumes overtook an Arlington high school biochemistry classroom as teacher and five students go to hospital By-Cole Wicklund Hazmat Team Evacuates Classroom Arlington, Texas—A biochemistry teacher and five students of Arlington’s Walnut High School arrived by ambulance at the hospital Monday after being overcome by fumes during a lab exercise. The assistant principal of the high school said that international Baccalaureate teacher Steven Jenkins immediately removed the chemical to the containment area. The principal also told the students to leave the area. The fire and police departments marked off the surrounding area and streets. “The teacher and five students are in stable condition at the hospital,” Asst. Fire Chief Jimmy Ferguson said. Arlington ISD declined to identify the six people by name citing privacy rules. The lab is expected to open again Thursday. -30-
