Wadjda is a film directed by Haifaa Mansour. It centers on a 10-year-old Saudi girl named Wadjda (Waad Mohammed) whose dream is to race her best friend and neighbor Abdullah (Abdullrahman Al Gohani) on a bicycle. Her mother (Reem Abdullah) will not buy her the bike she wants, saying that Saudi girls do not ride bikes. Wadjda takes it upon herself to raise the 800 riyals (US $213) she needs by selling woven bracelets to her classmates. Later, Wadjda learns of a Quran-reading competition at her school with a prize of 1000 riyals, enough to buy the bike.
