User:Cbl62/Michigan deletion candidates

At last count, there were 769 articles about Michigan football players. In part due to the efforts of several editors (myself included), this is far more than any other college football team. Compare Notre Dame (581), USC (496), Ohio State (415), Alabama (383), Penn State (368), Oklahoma (345), and Nebraska (345). My sense is that there are some Michigan players who currently have articles who probably should not under general notability standards. The list is my attempt to evaluate potential deletion candidates from within that group. Unless already nominated, I am not saying that any of these articles necessarily should be deleted; this is simply a "think-and-share-out-loud" effort. (The list does not include players who are still on the Michigan roster, as their career is not yet over and final notability assessment may be premature.) Others are welcome to contribute to, and comment on, the list. Cbl62 (talk) 15:26, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

  1. Antonio Bass - wide receiver; did not play in NFL; no conference or team honors; a top prospect who suffered a career-ending injury after his freshman year (created in 2007 by Jbanway)
  2. Carlos Brown - running back; did not play in a regular season NFL game; no conference or team honors; a backup for most of his career; gained 480 yards in his best season (2009), though he did have 5 100-yard games in his career, including a 191-yard game against Eastern Michigan; currently no significant coverage cited in the article (created by Jweiss11 in 2009)
  3. Carson Butler - See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Carson Butler (created in 2009 by Yunggunn2k3)
  4. William Campbell - offensive guard; still on NY Jets roster but hasn't appeared in a regular season NFL game; only conference honors were honorable mention in 2012; he was a 5-star recruit out of high school who had trouble with his weight but still garnered quite a bit of press, probably enough to satisfy GNG (created in 2012 by cbl62)
  5. Drew Dileo - wide receiver; did not play in the NFL; no conference honors; 331 receiving yards in his best season, 2012; while the raw numbers are not impressive, he became a fan favorite as "Mr. Get It Done" and received extensive press coverage, which IMO satisfies GNG (created in 2012 by cbl62)
  6. Perry Dorrestein - offensive tackle; did not play in a regular season NFL game; no conference honors; currently no significant coverage in the article that would satisfy GNG (created in 2011 by TonyTheTiger) -- [I have searched on-line sources and have found no significant coverage.] -- No objections raised to an AfD on Dorrestein, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Perry Dorrestein. Cbl62 (talk) 23:35, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
  7. Charles Drake - safety; did not play in a regular season NFL game, but did play in NFL Europe; no conference honors; only significant coverage currently included in article is 2012 obituary from LA Times following his death at age 30 (created in 2007 by Phbasketball6)
  8. Doug Dutch - cornerback; did not play in a regular season NFL game; no conference honors; was not even a starter at Michigan; no sources cited to even remotely satisfy WP:GNG (created in 2009 by Zta) [This one seems pretty indisputable. I opened it at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Doug Dutch.]
  9. Tyler Ecker - tight end; currently no sources included to establish notability; did not play in a regular season NFL game; only conference honor was honorable mention in 2007 (created in 2007 by 7231g) -- [On-line search doesn't turn up much significant coverage but there is this.] -- This one is nowu up s-at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tyler Ecker
  10. Brandent Englemon - defensive back; did not play in NFL; spent 2009 as a practice squad player in the CFL; no conference honors; not a star at Michigan; no coverage cited to satisfy GNG (created in 2009 by Giants27) [The only significant coverage I find is of his academic performance while in high school, e.g., here and here, which is assessed under the tougher standards of WP:NHSPHSATH.] This has now been nominated at: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brandent Englemon.
  11. Obi Ezeh - linebacker; did not play in a regular season game in the NFL; only conference honor was honorable mention in 2008; only "significant" coverage currently found in the article is from his high school playing days and is subject to the tougher standards for high school athletes per WP:NHSPHSATH (created in 2009 by TonyTheTiger)
  12. J. T. Floyd - cornerback; did not play in the NFL; only conference honor was honorable mention 2011-12; the only "significant" coverage currently in the article comes from Annarbor.com and could be characterized as routine involving injury status and suspension (created in 2011 by TonyTheTiger)
  13. Brendan Gibbons - placekicker; has not played in NFL; only conference honor was honorable mention in 2012; the press coverage he has received is principally due to unproven (at least in a criminal court) allegations that he sexually assaulted a female student which raise BLP1E issues (created in 2012 by Mgobluefan) Nominated for deletion on 9/10/15 at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brendan Gibbons
  14. Jerome Jackson - See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jerome Jackson (American football) (created in 2007 by Omg its will run)
  15. Kevin Koger - tight end 2008-11; did not play in the NFL; only conference honor was honorable mention in 2011; press coverage currently included in the article may or may not be enough under GNG; 244 receiving yards as a senior, he was a well-regarded player at Michigan but questionable under GNG (created in 2008 by Jmallitton) [On-line searches do turn up some significant coverage, including this, this, this, this, this, this, and this. Appears sufficient to pass WP:GNG in my opinion.]
  16. Matt Lentz - guard; currently no sources included to establish notability; did not play in a regular season NFL game, but he was a first-team All-Big 10 player in 2004 (created in 2006 by HR.) [A search of on-line sources turns up a feature story from The Detroit News dated 9/23/04 titled "Neat, tidy Lentz ruins stereotype of blockers." Also this from the Detroit Free Press and this from a local source and this from The Michigan Daily.]
  17. Greg Mathews - See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Greg Mathews (American football)
  18. Sam McGuffie - running back; did not play in a regular season NFL game but currently on Winnipeg roster in CFL; gained 883 yards in one season for Rice after transfer (created in 2008 by AbhiThakur) [Though not well-cited currently, my guess is that there's enough coverage to pass under GNG]

  20. David Moosman - offensive guard; did not play in a regular season NFL game; no conference honors; currently no significant coverage referenced in the article (created in 2010 by TonyTheTiger) [An on-line search does retrieve some significant coverage of Moosman, including this and this from the Detroit Free Press, this from annarbor.com, this from mlive.com, this from the Ann Arbor News, and this from the Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL).]
  21. Martavious Odoms - wide receiver; did not play in the NFL; no conference honors; current sources not sufficient to pass GNG - only "significant" coverage is a routine injury announcement from Annarbor.com; gained 443 yards as a freshman but fizzled after freshman year, never reaching even 300 yards in a season (created in 2009 by TonyTheTiger) See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Martavious Odoms
  22. Mark Ortmann - offensive tackle; did not play in a regular season NFL game; no conference honors; received some press when he was suspended for punching an opposing player; current sources probably not sufficient to pass GNG (created in 2010 by TonyTheTiger)
  23. Tony Pape - offensive tackle; never played a regular season NFL game, but did play in the NFL Europe for 2 years; no conference honors; now an assistant high school football coach; no sources cited that would satisfy GNG (created in 2007 by Phbasketball6) [A search of on-line sources does turn up some significant coverage, including this and this from the Detroit Free Press]. Also from The Detroit News: "Pape plans to lead way for U-M's rushing game", August 15, 2002; and "U-M's Pape is driven", November 20, 2003.] Cbl62 (talk) 14:28, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

Also this from mlive.com.]
  26. Michael Shaw - running back; never played in a regular season NFL game; no conference or team honors; gained 402 yards in his best season, 2010 (created in 2010 by Phildouglass)
  27. Vincent Smith - running back; never played in NFL; no conference honors; led Michigan's running backs in 2010 with 612 rushing yards; gained another layer of fame after famous hit by Jadeveon Clowney in Outback Bowl; sufficient coverage IMO to pass GNG (created in 2011 by cbl62)
  28. Adam Stenavich - offensive tackle; currently no sources included to establish notability; did not play in a regular season NFL game, but he was a first-team All-Big 10 player in 2004 (created in 2006 by Kevin82485) -- [An on-line search of Detroit Free Press archives doesn't reveal much in the way of significant coverage, except relating to allegations that he urinated on a night club floor here. The Michigan Daily also covered the public urination charge here but also did an in-depth piece here. The Detroit News has a couple significant articles about him: "Former Wisconsin fan Stenavich is true blue", September 22, 2005 (688 words), and "Adam Stenavich, Michigan Left Tackle", November 6, 2003 (458 words). The Toledo Blade also profiled him here.] -- CONCLUSION: NOT AN AFD CANDIDATE
  29. Darryl Stonum - wide receiver; a kid who appeared to have superstar potential but who crashed and burned due to legal problems; most of the significant coverage he received was for his legal problems; he did, however, set the Michigan Wolverines football record for most kickoff return yards in a single season with 1,001 yards as a member of the 2009 team (created in 2010 by cbl62)
  30. Jason Vinson - starting punter for Michigan's 1997 national championship team; second-team All-Big Ten, 1997; did not play in the NFL (created in 2012 by cbl62)
  31. Martell Webb - backup tight end who started only 3 games at Michigan; posted a total of 9 receptions for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns as well as 3 special teams tackles. Never played in a regular season NFL game. The only cited sources that arguably constitutes "significant" coverage is this one announcing that he has been signed to an NFL "practice" squad. (created in 2011 by TonyTheTiger) [A search of on-line sources finds some significant coverage including this from the Oakland Press, and this from the Ann Arbor News.]
Pretty sure he's a graduate assistant, but that probably doesn't do much to confer notability. Cbl62 (talk) 00:35, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
That is like the practice squad for coaches. We shouldn't delete the article any more than we should delete an article of a player who is on a practice squad.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 01:00, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
Not sure I agree with the analogy (pretty sure I don't), but in any event, we do delete articles on practice squad players. Cbl62 (talk) 01:06, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
I don't think Campbell's practice squad status should matter, but IMO he's probably received enough significant coverage to pass WP:GNG. Don't think I'd nominate him. Cbl62 (talk) 01:06, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
I am a bit confused. I thought you were saying you want all of these deleted.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 01:14, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
Nope. Per the intro: "I am not saying that any of these articles necessarily should be deleted; this is simply a 'think-and-share-out-loud' effort." Cbl62 (talk) 04:56, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
  • I think Martell Webb should be kept. He seems to be the tight end you call when you need a warm body who has a clue for a couple of weeks. He keeps getting calls for practice squads and I think as long as a guy continues to be called every couple of weeks to be on practice squads we should keep his article.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 01:12, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
  • I think Stoneum has both positive an negative encyclopedic value.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 01:12, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
  • Back in about 2008 they use to use a rule that if a player was a year removed from college his article could be deleted. I think we should sort of go by 1 year out of college and 1 year since he was last on a practice squad. That would make everything equitable.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 01:12, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
