Steve Upton (born 24 May 1946) is a British retired musician who was the drummer for the rock band Wishbone Ash from its inception in 1969 to his departure in 1990. Upton cofounded the band with bass guitarist and vocalist Martin Turner and guitarists Andy Powell and Ted Turner. In addition to his role as drummer, Upton was credited as co-composer of all the songs on the band's early albums, such as the million-selling Argus, and many of their later albums. He often contributed lyrics and titles, and acted as the band's tour manager and manager at various times.

Early life and career edit

Upton was born in Wrexham, Wales, and moved with his mother to Exeter, Devon, at the age of three. At 16, he joined a band at technical college when some of his friends were looking for a drummer, although he had not played drums before. He was right-handed, but learned to play on a friend's drumkit which had been set up for a left-handed player, and subsequently he always set up his own kit in that way. Andy Powell later said this enabled Upton to blah blah. Upton's first band was the Scimitars, who played Shadows covers, and when they split he joined a blues band called the Devarks, in which Martin Turner, then with the Empty Vessels, first noticed him. The Devarks toured in Germany but split up while they were there, and Upton returned to Exeter.

The Empty Vessels then consisted of Martin Turner, his brother Glenn on guitar, and drummer Adrian Smith. The Turners were experiencing personal differences with Smith and decided to replace him. After a gig at Plymtree on 16 July 1966, the Turners bumped into Upton in a café, and Glenn Turner approached him and asked him to join the Empty Vessels. Upton soon accepted and started rehearsals with the band on 20 July, prior to their first gig together on 23 July at the Paulk Arms in Torquay. A few days later, the band opened for the Who in Barnstaple and Torquay. They went on to support Fleetwood Mac, P. P. Arnold, Tomorrow, Episode Six, the Gods, the Herd and Traffic Jam, an early incarnation of Status Quo.

Upton rented a house in Exeter, and the two Turner brothers joined them later. Martin Turner stated in his autobiography that Upton, who was 18 months his senior, taught him a great deal about growing up and looking after himself away from his parents: "He was very important in my development as a person," he said. Upton also took over the administrative side of the band from Martin Turner, liaising with agents and handling the day-to-day running of the band. Upton was working in the office at a timber yard in Exeter at that time, where he also found Martin Turner a job.
