First generation Degree Seeker

Every now and then I have faced challenges paying my school which I believe is the primary hindrance to my future goal, becoming a medical practitioner. Being raised in a family of three, it has not been easy for me to get undivided attention from my parents regarding education mostly in my higher learning since the other siblings also required to attain a baseline-level of education, at least up to high school. Besides, being the middle the child in our family, I found it difficult to come to terms with the fact that my older sibling had to be sent to school first and that, in effect, delayed my joining of school in my first grade.

My father, the bread-winner in my family, is not highly educated that has denied him a chance to get a well-paying job to put me through school which has sufficient facilities to support my aspirations. He finished high school which marked the end of his learning journey since he had to concentrate on winning the bread for his three children and a wife. I believe if given a chance for this scholarship, I will put all necessary effort to change this cycle of low education in my family. Besides, my mother dropped out of school at the tenth grade that also makes it complicated to support us through school.

Regarding my learning aspirations, I started as a young girl to like the fantasy of being a doctor even before my eighth birthday. Despite the fact that I did not know what being a doctor entailed, I was always wishing I could take part in the profession and assist in saving lives, which to me was more of a call rather than a career. This aspiration has not died from my heart, I still believe I will make a competent healthcare professional, and based on the number of increased medical care demand, I am on the right track and my nursing will not only assist me in getting a job but also make me a helpful person in the society. At the moment, I am a continuing full time student at my 32 years of age. Furthermore, I have a child, two years old and being a single mum; I have a critical task ahead of me of working to provide for my family and at the same time, acting as a role model for my son.

If my application goes through, I will be the first person in my family to have a degree. I don’t take this fact for granted. The central question is what I will do with the chance granted to me as the first “First generation Degree Seeker?” First, I will ensure I give back to the society by helping my parents in educating other siblings, and more so, by encouraging my colleagues and friends to invest in education since it is the only sure way for economic development. Secondly, I will act as a good ambassador for the institution by following the rules and most importantly, by bridging the gap between different ethnic communities for the student in the institution.
