Evan Maureen Ryan (born 1971) is a media executive and former government official who worked as Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. State Department before joining the media company Axios as executive vice president.[2]
Early Life and Education
editRyan is the daughter of Anthony and Donna Ryan and grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. She graduated Georgetown Visitation Prep School in 1989, then graduated with B.A. in Political Science from Boston College in 1993. In 2006, she received a Masters in International Public Policy at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.[3]
Career
editRyan was Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff to First Lady Hillary Clinton from 1994 to 1997. She was then Deputy Director of Scheduling for the First Lady from 1997 to 2000,[4][5] traveling to 22 countries to prep for Clinton’s trips abroad.[3]
She later was Director of Scheduling for the 2000 Senatorial campaign of Hillary Clinton and Deputy Director of Communications for the John Kerry for President Campaign from 2003 to 2004.[4][5]
Ryan went to work for the Clinton Global Initiative in 2005 as the Deputy Chair for the Governance track.[3]
Ryan worked for Joe Biden's political action committee in 2006 and was then the Deputy Campaign Manager for the Biden for President Campaign.[5][6] She continued to campaign for Biden when he was nominated to be Vice President.[3]
From 2009 to 2013, Ryan served as the assistant for intergovernmental affairs and public liaison for Joe Biden, Vice President of the United States. She was Biden's liaison to elected officials and constituency groups. At the same time, she was Special Assistant to President Barack Obama for Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement.[4][7]
Ryan was nominated as Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs in July 2013[4] and confirmed in September 2013.[7] In this role, she was in charge of about 140 cultural, professional and academic international exchange programs.[7] At her Senate confirmation hearing for the position, she said the cultural exchange programs were the "lifeblood of public diplomacy."[8]
In 2017, she joined Axios, a media company created by former executives at Politico.[2] In her role, Ryan leads marketing and branding and participates in live events.[2] She led a November 2017 Axios event on cancer innovation.[9] She also is an executive producer of the Axios docu-series on HBO.[10]
Additional Activities
editRyan was a founding board member of the conflict-management Non-Governmental Organization PeacePlayers International. She was a consultant for the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, an NGO co-founded by Angelina Jolie and Gene Sperling. She was also a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations from 2008 to 2013.[3]
Personal life
editRyan is married to Tony Blinken. The couple met in 1995 when they were both working at the White House and were married in 2002.[11][6]
