A Home theater digital media player is a stand-alone home entertainment device capable of storing and playing files in one or more media formats on a home theater system.

An HTMP includes media storage and a user interface to play the stored media (music, pictures, video) through home theater connections. An HTMP is functionally similar to a digital media receiver, but network connectivity is not required and may only be used as a method of loading media files onto the device. In contrast, a media server requires computer network connectivity to function and a media center or HTPC is a converted computer, not necessarily a device.

A video iPod with A/V cables could be considered an HTMP when connected to a home theater system.
