In the larger framework of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire Armenian community leaders all over the country were arrested.

b. 8 September 1868 in Mosul Survivor Patriarch of Constantinople 14 October 1916 Bagdad Deposed as Patriarch by decree of the Young Turkish government 28 July 1916 and deported to Bagdad over Konia, Aleppo, Der Zor 4 September 1916, 2 March 1917 (when British troups were approaching) transferred to Mosul. He was liberated by the British in November 1918. Initiated humanitarian help for Armenian refugees in Mosul and returned to Constantinople 4 March 1919 for a second term as Patriarch till 1922, fled to Bulgaria and settled in Bagdad 1924, d. 4 June 1947 in Bagdad.
