O'Neill left the show in December at the end of her contract.[9] Having departed in the show in 2007, Amanda Drew returned to the show as May Wright for several episodes. She appeared during June.[10] A return for Nick Cotton (John Altman) was announced on 2 October 2008; he began appearing on 25 December.[11] His secret daughter, Dotty Cotton (Molly Conlin) was introduced alongside him.[12]

The first regular character to be introduced in 2008 was Christian Clarke (John Partridge), the homosexual brother of Jane Beale (Laurie Brett).[13] The estranged father of Chelsea Fox (Tiana Benjamin), Lucas Johnson (Don Gilet), was introduced in April and his son, Jordan (Michael-Joel David Stuart), was introduced the following month.[14] Carmel Cryan joined the cast in June as Brenda Boyle, the love interest of Charlie Slater (Derek Martin).[15] Larry Lamb began appearing in the role of Archie Mitchell, father to Ronnie (Samantha Womack) and Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons) in July.[16] The son of Vinnie Monks (Bobby Davro), Callum, was introduced in August, portrayed by Elliott Jordan.[17] A love interest for Callum was also introduced in August, Danielle Jones (Lauren Crace).[18]

Parish returned in June. Babita Pohoomull's departure from the show was announced on 6 December 2007; her character Preeti Choraria departed in January.[20] Hazel Hobbs (Kika Mirylees) departed from the show in April, whilst Mohammed George (who has portrayed Gus Smith since 2002) quit his role and departed in May.[21] Steven Beale (Aaron Sidwell) was written out of the series in 2008 in a decision which Sidwell praised.[22][23] Keith and Mickey Miller (David Spinx and Joe Swash) were axed from the show in 2008, with the characters departing in July.[24] Stephen Lord's departure was reported in July 2008; his character Jase Dyer departed in August.[25] Emma Barton was axed from the show in April 2008;[26] her character Honey Mitchell departed in September.[27] When producers "ran out of storylines ideas" for the character, Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter) was written out of the series.[28] Zahra Ahmadi's decision to quit her role of Shabnam Masood was reported on 8 September 2008, with Ahmadi citing her reason for departing as "producers refusing to give her meaty storylines".[29] Bobby Davro quit the show in July 2008, having appeared in the show as Vinnie Monks for a year.[30] Davro later confirmed he left the role because he found it "boring".[31]
