Arise from Darkness is an American art house paranormal thriller that premiered at Film Invasion L.A in 2016 under it’s original title When my Eyes go Dark. The screenplay was written by and starred Zachary Laoutides. Arise from Darkness is the first film to use EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) that was recorded by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit where Lázaro Ruben Torres assisted priests in paranormal investigations and exorcisms[1][2]

Premise edit

The story is based on the early psychic events of Lázaro Ruben Torres, who discovers his abilities after he and his daughter were victims of a violent assault in which his young daughter died. Lázaro tries to develop his gifts to connect with his deceased daughter, and to discover her murderer.[3]

The film is set in Detroit,[4] and its production was completed in Chicago on June 15, 2015 by Ave Fénix Pictures.

It is the second film of the Executive Producer Monica Esmeralda Leon and of the director and actor Zachary Laoutides.[5][6]

Release edit

Arise from Darkness was the first film to open FILA (Film Invasion Los Angeles) in 2016.[7] The film was released in theaters of USA and worldwide by Indican Pictures on January 16, 2017.[8] As the first month of its release, IndieWire listed Arise from Darkness as one of the 20 independent films with the most earnings in 2017.[9]

Reception edit

Zachary Laoutides was nominated for Best Screenplay Writer in the Film Invasion L.A 2016 and shared nominations with Mónica Esmeralda León for Best Film and Best Director.[10]

The film received four-star reviews from Examiner.com, Inquisitr and The Levity Ball.[11] AXS TV called it "terrifying and divine at the same time".[12]
