The name comes from the Irish writer, Brendan Behan, who as a young Irishman working in England was often stopped by the police. He gave them the name Alfonsus Bluepenny as a false identity. Something about the name got to me, in particular the toffee-nose image it creates of the bearer of such a title. It could not have been any further away from the character of Behan himself. Read his book 'Borstal Boy' for the full story. I use the name on Wikipedia and elsewhere to show my contempt for grand institutions whilst availing of their many excellent facilities!
