VOICES OF TACOMA: A GATHERING OF POETS edit

Voices of Tacoma: A Gathering of Poets is a project based in Tacoma, Washington, and is partly funded by the Tacoma Artists Initiative Program (TAIP). The project has several program components which will culminate in Fall 2024 with the publication of an anthology of poetry of, about, and/or inspired by Tacoma.

Prior to the publication of the book, the project will host monthly writers’ group meetings (Gatherings) and is organizing four Poetry Workshops facilitated by local poets and other literary art creatives.

The project builds on the established foundation of the Tacoma literary arts scene. Tacoma poetry which informs this project includes anthologies such as In Tahoma’s Shadow: Poems from the City of Destiny, 2009, by William Kupinse (first Tacoma Poet Laureate, 2008-2009) and Tammy Robacker (2010-2011 Tacoma Poet Laureate) and We Need A Reckoning (2021) by Gloria Joy Kazuko Muhammad.

The Tacoma literary arts scene includes several organizations which complement and/or directly support Voices of Tacoma, including Creative Colloquy, Write253, Blue Cactus Press, and others.

The Tacoma Arts Commission, through TAIP and other funding and support programs, is instrumental in helping these and the other art organizations to continue to thrive.
