Great work with setting up a project banner. I thought about it a few days ago, looked at some other banners and saw that they were quite complex, but I notice that you've brougth this one up to standards as well. There are basically two aspects that I would like to see included in the banner: whether the article has the right structure (not only if the infobox, etc. has been added) and extending the use of the banner to the categories in the scope of the project (not only articles). I remember reading something about policy issues for project banners. Is there any reason to defer from applying the banner? -- Domino theory 13:09, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. They're almost ready to use, but there is a bit of work left to do before we start using them. Including the two features that you mention is no problem, but I think we also need to rethink how the project itself is organised in order for the banner to function properly:
  1. Needs structure: i have added the structureneeded parameter to the banner, but the requirement for structure should probably also be a part of article assessment, which is not yet set up.
  2. The categorisation of project scope is very important. This can be addressed by the creation of subprojects/taskforces - I have created a couple of sample taskforces in the banner. But this categorisation can go in two different directions:
    1. Categorising by continent is no problem. Similarly, the banner for the Prussia project can be modified to include the subdivisions that formed the previous child-projects (province, kreise, etc.). Further categorisation might be necessary later on, especially given the huge number of states in some areas. These subcategories are also ideal ways to interact with geographically-localised projects who already have done a lot of work on the former states in their region.
    2. Another way to slice it is by the proposed sub-articles for each entry (eg. military, rulers) - this is something that i've been thinking about lately, and so it is still an idea-in-progress. Each of these could form a subproject, and would be the ideal way to interact with other projects (eg. military history, biography), just as the image requests in the banner now inform the heraldry project. Further consultation with the relevant projects is still required.
To see what the banners look like under different settings, see here - 52 Pickup 12:03, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

now-defunct edit

I'd like to change "now-defunct" to "defunct". In addition to being ugly and awkward, the "now-" prefix doesn't add any meaning to the sentence; "a collaborative effort to improve Wikipedia's coverage of defunct states and territories" conveys exactly the same information as "a collaborative effort to improve Wikipedia's coverage of now-defunct states and territories". It's not like without the "now-", someone's going to assume that only countries that were already defunct by 1634 are relevant to the project, or countries that aren't defunct yet but will be within the next two hundred years. Thanks but {{{EB-taskforce|}}} wasn't added next to "|tf 5=". I didn't nowiki it in my request, so it didn't show in the visible text. I fixed it now. Please add it into the template. Thanks.--NortyNort (Holla) 12:37, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I should have noticed that! Now fixed. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:33, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Importance scale edit

Is there any way we can get importance scales added for this project & subprojects? Ejgreen77 (talk) 19:30, 28 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Edit request: Bypass redirects edit

The sandbox contains two edits:

  1. I just now bypassed the redirects from Wikipedia:WikiProject Former countries/HRE task forceWikipedia:WikiProject Former countries/Holy Roman Empire task force and Wikipedia:WikiProject Former countries/AH task forceWikipedia:WikiProject Former countries/Austria-Hungary task force.
  2. On 28 December 2013, Knochen made an edit with the summary (Script) File:Flag of the Second Empire of Brazil.svgFile:Flag of Empire of Brazil (1870-1889).svg is renamed.

Knochen's edit also included the addition of a sixth taskforce (linking to WikiProject British Empire), but this is not supported by Template:WPBannerMeta, so I have removed that.

Could a template editor update the template with the sandbox version (or drop a note here and notify me if you want to discuss the edits), please? Thanks! — OwenBlacker (Talk) 20:13, 17 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Why do you want to bypass redirects? See WP:NOTBROKEN. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:38, 18 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I have rejected this type of edit in the past. If the redirect is somehow broken, then it should be fixed. Only certain types of redirects such as typos and incorrect titles should be bypassed. Good working redirects should usually be left alone to do their job. – Paine Ellsworth CLIMAX! 18:21, 18 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Update: After a little research, I agree that the redirect title of the flag (of the second empire of Brazil) may be seen as an incorrect name. I have found nothing about a second empire of Brazil, so we can call this request   Partly done:. The other two are useful aliases/shortcuts. – Paine Ellsworth CLIMAX! 19:53, 18 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Edit request for WikiProject consolidation edit

Please alter the template to match the current sandbox version with output visible on the testcases page, the net diff is this. This change is part of a larger effort to effect the consensus to convert WikiProject Ottoman Empire to a taskforce of WikiProject Former countries, see this discussion for details. The taskforces have been ordered alphabetically in the template for organizational convenience; the image for the new taskforce was taken directly from the old banner. I'm also changing it to pass BANNER_NAME for the sake of wrapper templates (as I will be converting Template:WikiProject Ottoman Empire to a wrapper once all bot runs are complete).

Courtesy ping to WhisperToMe to offer the chance for additional input.

If you catch me in the next hour I can probably answer any questions; otherwise I will check back in tomorrow and the day after; I also plan to update the documentation at that time if no one else has gotten around to it; thanks for the help.

@Quantocius Quantotius, Mdaniels5757, Tbhotch, and Nardog: That is the sort of thing that should have been picked up by correct use of sandbox and testcases, see WP:TESTCASES. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:30, 29 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Redrose64 🌹, Nardog, and © Tbhotch: Thanks for catching this, I'll take responsibility for this one; must've been short of caffeine at the time.
Oddly the testcases page is not showing a difference between the live and sanboxed versions of the template even though the fix desynced them (diff). I suspect this is because {{testcase}} doesn't play well with hooks, but I'll be honest with you my time for this is sharply limited right now so I probably won't be able to research this further for a bit; in the meantime lesson learned; in the future I'll try to set up alternative testcases formulations that make this obvious from the get go.
𝒬𝔔 00:45, 4 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
The "nested" code only kicks in when the wikiproject banner is enclosed in {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which isn't present (either as itself or as a redir) in the testcases page as it presently stands. See for example Template:WikiProject Film/testcases. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:48, 4 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Redrose64 🌹: Thanks for the additional info, it all makes sense now and should be an easy fix. If there's something else you think I should know about best practices in this area going forward feel free to hit me with another ping at anytime, I appreciate all constructive feedback.

Template-protected edit request on 19 May 2023 edit

Request to change the ensign of civil fleet displayed here. This ensign has never had the character of a state flag. Placing it here as a "symbol" of Austro-Hungary is a mistake. This ensign has been removed from the Austria-Hungary article and many others. More on the subject in terms of content, see the article Flags of Austria-Hungary. This is a substantive error that is currently being fixed in wikipedia (there are still many links left). I suggest changing the ensign to the flag of the ruling Habsburg dynasty most often used as a symbol of Austria-Hungary (alternatively on a symbolic hybrid flag) or official coat of arms.
