Bug when template is in a table edit

I have used this template as {{User lives in|England}} in my user page where it forms part of a table. In order to get the table to display correctly, I had to add </td><td> after the template to start a new cell, instead of just putting ||. This still happens when I remove the England parameter (and live Planet Earth). It does not occur for any of the other four userboxes I currently use. I assume this is a bug in the template, but I have no knowledge of template programming and the source code is very discouraging. Can someone explain this behaviour, and perhaps fix it? --Verbarson (talk) 21:57, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
