Template talk:Swadesh list 207 plain

Latest comment: 18 years ago by Peter Isotalo in topic Bloated template

How to use the template edit

This template is used to display a Swadesh list of 207 words in a specific language, each line containing :

  • the word in English
  • the word in the specific language

It is used for instance in the Belarusian Swadesh list page, which can be a useful basis for creating a new list.

The skeleton below can be used, after copy and paste, to create a new page.

  • language= to be followed by the language name in English (for instance French, Basque, Icelandic, ...)
  • nativename= to be followed by the language name in the specific language (for instance Français, Euskara, Íslenska, ...)
  • wrdxxx= to be followed by the translation of the xxxth word of the list, for instance wrd003=il (in French)

Bloated template edit

I can't for the life of me see why you would need to have separate templates for each and every one of the individual words in the list. It strikes me as extreme over-usage of templates. Why does every word in the tables get an individual template?

I gave already answers to similar questions to Gurubrahma (1) and Shreshth91 (2), and in Template_talk:Swadesh_163. But, if you are in trouble with such a use of templates, feel free to modify the various pages using them, and replace every template by the corresponding word. Giving this tedious and time-consuming job to a bot would be an alternate solution, but I don't know the way to do it; if you do know, please tell me. Croquant 14:55, 26 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Just replace all the {{Swadesh XXX}} in this template with the actual words themselves rather than templates that contain nothing but those very same words. In most cases the number of characters would be fewer than if the templates were used. There would be no difference in appearance as far as I know, and you could delete all of those 207 mini-templates that currently show up whenever one tries to edit any of the Swadesh list articles.
I've edited the first ten words in the template to illustrate my point.

I am afraid you didn't understand what I told you : the problem is not for me to know what to do manually; I just don't have time to spend doing it : there are 207 words to type in 5 different templates, and 100 in 2 others (1235 words if I'm not wrong). Croquant 18:02, 26 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
You're already using a template for the tables that includes anything inserted into that template whether it's just plain text or a meta-template. Have you noticed that I removed Swadesh 001-010 to illustrate that they're all completely superfluous?
Peter Isotalo 00:35, 27 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
I figured, what the hell, I might as well remove them all. It's now free of any meta-templates and still looks exactly the same in articles. No need to type anything in more than once if it's already in the template, whether as text or a meta-template.
Peter Isotalo 12:41, 27 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for typing the text directly in place of the mini-templates. However, there is something you didn't understand yet : there is not only one, but several templates (7 exactly) to modify the same way (the list is given in the comments upper in this talk page). Croquant 13:01, 27 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Croquant, you can't use templates only to make it just slightly more easy for yourself to edit. You need to take some consideration to other users, especially newbies, and the general consensus for how templates should be used. The 207 words aren't about to change any time soon and any corrections will be minimal. Creating all those mini-templates just to make it just slightly easier for yourself to edit is not helpful to the community as a whole.
And why a full 7 templates in the first place? The 100-lists aren't even in use and don't even seem to have any purpose. Also, why have several combinations of tables with and without IPA? Either all tables should have IPA or none at all. English speakers would have just as much trouble pronouncing Icelandic as they would Japanese (probably moreso). I'm also skeptical to having IPA at all, since it can very easily lead to bloated templates and pointless bickering over which dialect to choose, especially when it comes to Chinese. Info like this is more appropriate at the wiktionaries.

Quiet, Peter, quiet ... Croquant 13:53, 27 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'd appreciate if you'd settle for posts that actually move the discussion forward. This just seems like cryptic sarcasm.
