Awards

Added awards section from Template:Infobox actor. --AMK1211 20:48, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Disambiguation

Hi there! I've noticed that the category "medium" in this template links to the disambiguation page "media". I am not versed in template maintenance at all, so I wonder if someone could fix it, perhaps to remove the link altogether or direct it to one of the options in the media disambiguation page such as "broadcast media"? Right now it is causing many comedians to show up on the what links here for the disambiguation page. Thanks!--Xnuala (talk) 02:20, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Belated note: Fixed, per User talk:Xnuala#Re: Template help. -- BenTALK/HIST 21:51, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Color usage

Is there any way we could start using white text inside darkly hued color bars? Ichormosquito 23:34, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Nevermind, fixed. Ichormosquito 07:04, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

awards header colour

i have changed the colour of the awards fields from this to this to match that of the infobox header. however, the default font gets drowned in the darker hue. it would be great if someone could lend a hand. --emerson7 | Talk 15:35, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

The titles of the awards are links so they will always appear as the usual link color. I don't think it is a good idea to change the link color in the mainspace since it is quite standard. I would rather change the background to something else. However if you really must do it you could use something like:
<font color=White>[[Academy Award]]s</font color>
but again I would discourage this in the mainspace. --Kudret abiTalk 01:22, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Parameters need to be standardized

The parameters for this template really need to conform to the standards of other more popular infoboxes such as {{Infobox Person}}. For instance, birth_name should be birthname, and birth_place should be birthplace. Gary King (talk) 19:02, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

I now see that this is intentional. Not sure if that's a good idea or a bad one. Gary King (talk) 19:07, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Suggestions

I'm not even going to attempt to try any of these myself because I really fail to understand the makeup of templates. Anyway, looking at the template I have a few sugestions. Comparing it to the actor infobox:

  • "Notable works and roles" was deleted from the actor infobox a while back as it was deemed POV to negate which of an actor's role are truely notable. I think it should be removed from here as well.
  • I also suggest modelling the awards section on the other template: Having the awards in a collapsible hidden section, specifying that is for awards won only, and centreing all of the awards.
  • Finally, like the actor infobox, perhaps the "death date" section could be changed so that they change the colour of the infobox to show that a person is dead.

I don't know, just some ideas. Gran2 15:29, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

I really think the awards fields need fixing. If they were centred and made collapsible, it'd be a lot better. Gran2 14:23, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm surprised that this award has not been featured. Seeing as how it is considered to be one of the biggest stand-up awards in Britain and possibly the world, you would think it would be listed. Here are details of this year's award. See here. ISD (talk) 13:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Salary

Why does this infobox not have Salary, like the person infobox? Ctjf83Talk 05:04, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I don't know, but (just my 0.02), there seem to be some other fields - such as "religion", that also do not seem to have been "inherited" from person infobox. ((The field "religion" displays as "religious beliefs" when used in a {{template person}} person infobox)). In fact, I don't think that {{template comedian}} inherits any stuff from {{template person}}, in the object-oriented computer software sense, where a subclass inherits slots or methods from a "more general" class. Anyone who understands templates better than us blind mice, please feel free to chime in, here. --Mike Schwartz (talk) 09:30, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Microformat upgrade request- no visual impact to template

{{editprotected}}

  • Visual impact: None
  • What it does: This change allows wikipedia to emit event microformat metadata, as do other infoboxes such as these. The change should have no visual impact and introduces non functional classes to elements of the table. These classes are recognized by external microformat parsers to retrieve information in the cells.
  • Requested changes:
  1. class="infobox vcard" → class="infobox vcard vevent"
  2. ! class="fn" → ! class="fn summary"
  • Background: This allows events of the individuals life to be represented such as the span of their life, from birth to death date. Currently the template supports hCard format which does not describe events. Further information on what this does and how to see some of the benefits may be found here.

Template needs additional sections

  Unresolved

To whom this may concern,

Here is a recommendation I have for an edit for "Template:infobox comedian" to include |children=, |parents=, & |relatives=, since this template is used for several famous actors/comedians in lieu of "Template:infobox person", my recommendation is that there needs to be more sections on the template to include important personal information (which, in this case, is family information.)

Microformat fix

This template has | aboveclass = fn, which is fine for individuals; but for duos and groups, the value should be "fn org". Please sync the sandbox to apply a switch, based on the presence of a value for |current_members= or |past_members=, instead. (I've also added some more hCard microformat classes.) Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:45, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

I've amended the sandbox, because the way it was coded, it was expecting a parameter |if=. The other change is because other parts of the template permit |Current_members= and |Past_members= to be used as synonyms for |current_members= and |past_members=. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:31, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Edit request 12 December 2012

In line with {{infobox person}}, the "Domestic partner" parameter should be changed to just "Partner", also including the display from "Domestic partner(s)" to "Partner(s)".

"Domestic", i.e. living together, is a detail which may or may not apply to a relationship. Under the current parameter, a relationship which is not a domestic relationship and not a marriage would not qualify to be mentioned in the infobox, which makes very little sense imho. When it can be verified that two people are indeed together, a pair, an item, then details such as whether they live together should be reserved for the main body of the article. We shouldn't discriminate relationships along a very arbitrary parameter like that. (Imho we shouldn't even have a parameter (Spouse) which is exclusively based on marital status, but one step at a time.) --213.168.109.165 (talk) 00:05, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Infobox People/Actor/Comedian

The regular people and the actor infoboxes allow for children to be included in an infobox, especially if they are notable. I've noted on some comedians' articles, this information is included in the article copy but it doesn't appear in the Infobox on the page. Since this template allows for spouses and domestic partners, could it also include children? It's relevant in that many comedians include material about their families in the routines. Liz Read! sometimes the most effective way to get feedback is to simply make the change, since few people watch the talk page, but many will see the change in the articles. I am happy to revert if there is serious objection. for Billy Connolly, I can always just switch it to use {{infobox person}} instead. Frietjes (talk) 17:31, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

@Tinton5, Mlpearc, and Thumperward: how about if we just remove the colouring, like every other person infobox? Frietjes (talk) 13:54, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm not familiar with the reason infoboxes have color in the first place, I am aware of the colors in Music infoboxes denote different types of musical release ie. album, single, studio album, greatest hits etc. If there is no categorization type reasons for the color, then yes, I'd remove it. Mlpearc (open channel) 14:06, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
I boldly removed it. this should get the attention of anyone who doesn't watch the infobox talk page. Frietjes (talk) 14:21, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
There's no categorisation; the colour is completely arbitrary. (I'd argue that the music infobox's use of colour is no more valid, but that's for another day). Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 14:00, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

There is consensus for deprecation. AlbinoFerret 16:03, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Should the infobox parameters "Influences / Influenced by" in Template:Infobox comedian be deprecated, consistent with their removal from Template:Infobox person via this RfC, per admin closing on 22 July 2013. --Tenebrae (talk) 20:23, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

  • Support Influences are no more significant to comedians than to actors, filmmakers or others in the creative arts, and consensus at Template:Infobox Actor, which was absorbed into Template:Infobox person, is that they should not be included there but, instead, with context and citing in article prose. They are highly problematic parameters given to uncited, POV claims by enthusiastic fans. Infoboxes are for simple, non-contentious facts, and not places for a large clutter of footnotes, such as the seven at Jon Stewart's infobox. --Tenebrae (talk) 20:23, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Support – As pointed out above, the reasons (RfC) why these parameters were removed from {{Infobox comedian}}, and previously from {{Infobox actor}}, equally apply to {{Infobox comedian}}. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 04:08, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

  • Support. I am inclined to agree with Tenebrae's position and the consensus voiced here so far; at worst, the claims implied in these parameters tend to be utterly unsourced fancruft/original research, and even where sourcing does exist to explicitly support a direct claim of influence, it is still better discussed the article prose in a more thorough and contextualized manner. Almost all notable comedians will have stated their influences at some point in their careers, and as such these statements can be referenced. Hello, the two-word labels look kind of odd when they line-wrap, so I edited the version of the template in the sandbox to include nbsp between them. Can this version be transferred? 86.166.149.70 (talk) 23:21, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Question: Your version does look better in some respects on the testcases page, but look at the "Years active" parameter. There appears to be very little space between the parameter and the description: Years active and 1994–present. The parameter seems to be pushing the "1994" to the right just a bit. And I'm also curious as to why you didn't mention the other changes you made, the "includeonly" tags and the change of magic word in the Above parameter?  Paine  11:21, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
The testcases do look slightly better with "years active" all on one line, but I believe that it is generally a bad idea to try and fix wrapping based on how it looks on your own display. For example on a mobile device, it would probably look worse. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:51, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

That's probably a matter of most editors not knowing how to write code and not wanting to risk breaking something being used site-wide. Also, and I can't speak for any other editor, but Template:Infobox comedian won't let me edit in to edit. But those fields were deprecated as a result of a unanimous RfC last year, here. --Tenebrae (talk) 00:40, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Good point, the idea is equally relevant to them, I have now suggested it to them also. Back ache (talk) 09:43, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
@Back ache:Please see WP:Citing IMDb. Because IMDb accepts user input, and its editorial staff does not do a particularly good job of verifying this information (I can confirm this from personally being the victim of false information which it took moving heaven and earth to get deleted), IMDb is generally not considered to be a reliable source for Wikipedia. Infoboxes should not contain links to sites which may contain unreliable information. Beyond My Ken (talk) 03:01, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

The second thing might seem redundant. But for people like Brent Butt and other comedians, they are not just comedians. Butt specifically has expanded into acting, producing, writing, etc.. It would be good to list all occupations.

The most notable credits would be useful as well. Those are my suggestions. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 07:42, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Notable_work

Please replace |notable_work= with |notable_works= to make it consistent with other infoboxes. Capankajsmilyo(Talk | Infobox assistance) 00:05, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

@Capankajsmilyo: I see we are on the same wavelength with this. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 08:13, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
