"Current position" header

@Muboshgu and Jweiss11: As an alternative to your issue over the use of Current (MOS:CURRENTLY / WP:PRECISELANG) in the "Current position" header,[1] consider an alternative of just showing the current team (e.g. Michigan) instead of "Current position". As it is, the infobox already uses the current team's colors for its shading. See the proposed changes under "sandbox" at Template:Infobox_college_coach/testcases#Test_1. The behavior would be similar to Template:Infobox college football player, Template:Infobox baseball biography, and Template:Infobox basketball biography.—Bagumba (talk) 08:58, 10 January 2019 (UTC)

I personally prefer to see "Michigan Wolverines" vs. "Michigan" (in this case). It more closely mirrors pro sports. Rikster2 (talk) 20:35, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
The advantage here is you save a line in the infobox. Disadvantage is that you lose the wikilink to the current team, unless you wikilink the heading itself. As it stands, there is also sometimes confusion for newbies and IP editors about what record is supposed to go in the "current_record" field. You'll often see inexperienced editors change the record at an article like Mike Krzyzewski from his record just at Duke to his overall college record (including his stint at Army). Losing the "current position" heading to tie all those fields together might make that issue worse. As for comparisons to similar pro infoboxes, Template:Infobox basketball biography having two fields with the same label "Position" strikes me as sub-optimal design. Template:Infobox NFL biography has an even worse problem in that it has one position field to relate both playing positions and current coaching positions. The fact that Jason Garrett played as a quarterback is nowhere to be found in the infobox there because the position field is being hijacked, you could say, to denote his current position as head coach of the Cowboys. When he retires from coaching, I guess "quarterback" will be placed there, a la Bill Cowher. Not good design. This point has been discussed by others as well. As for this issues on this infobox, seems like we are trying to fix things that aren't broken. Jweiss11 (talk) 21:05, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
Wait, basketball biography doesn't have two fields labelled "position." It has one labelled "position" and one labelled "career_position," which generally is used for players who later coach (so it shows a "head coach" position but also tells the reader that as a player they were a forward or whatever. I don't see that as a flaw at all. And at basketball biography we used to have the current team wikilinked in the header, but we removed it as superfluous as it's linked in the coaching history and in the first sentence of the article. Does the user need to be able to jump to the team article from the header? We didn't think so. I also really don't think you need a "career position" of "Quarterback/Head coach" for someone like Garrett. If the person was a coach that's very obvious from there being a coach tenure history clearly labelled on the infobox. Wouldn't be there if they weren't also a coach at some point (and in fact he was an assistant before becoming a head coach) Rikster2 (talk) 21:54, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
Yes, Template:Infobox basketball biography indeed has two fields labelled "position". The fields named "position" and "career_position" both display the same label "position" when the infobox is rendered. Yes, both fields host vital data that should be included in the infobox, but two fields in the same infobox having identical labels is iffy design. As for the Jason Garrett infobox, I can't quite understand what you are arguing. Don't you think the absence of any indication that he played a quarterback is a problem? Are you arguing that the listing of "Head coach" at the top is superfluous? Jweiss11 (talk) 22:33, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
So what? The second instance is in the clearly-labelled “playing career” section of the box. You could put “playing position,” but what’s the point, really? For Garrett, you guys do what you want to do. I think his NFL playing position is relevant - more so than a lot of these college coaches we are talking about who never played professionally or didn’t even have notable college playing careers. But that’s an NFL project decision since that box isn’t used anywhere else. Rikster2 (talk) 03:39, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
For this thread, I'd suggest limiting the focus to the current team/position header.—Bagumba (talk) 03:31, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
Re: early wikilink to current team The idea to have an earlier wikilink for the current team was discussed at Template_talk:Infobox_college_football_player/Archive_1#Header_links_accessibility. For the record, I supported it, but it did not gain traction. It seems that most sports bio infoboxes now leave the team links for the career section.—Bagumba (talk) 03:31, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
@Rikster2: The display is controlled by what is passed to |current_team=. Unless you're thinking of a template improvement to convert from school name to full team name e.g. Michigan->Michigan Wolverines (which even {{Infobox college football player}} does not do).—Bagumba (talk) 11:21, 15 January 2019 (UTC)
